 Title    Elastic Constants of Binary Liquid Crystalline Mixtures  
 Abstract    Microscopic expressions for the elastic constants of binary liquid crystalline mixtures composed of short rigid uniaxial molecules are derived in the thermodynamic limit at small distorsions and a small density. Uniaxial and biaxial nematic phases are considered. The expressions involve the one-particle distribution functions and the potential energy of two-body short-range interactions. The theory is used to calculate the phase diagram of a mixture of rigid prolate and oblate molecules. The concentration dependence of the order parameters and the elastic constants are obtained. The possibility of phase separation is not investigated.

 Title    The Elastic Constants of Nematic /i-Hexylcyanobiphenyl Determined with the Capacitance Method  
 Abstract    The splay (K n) and bend (K 33) elastic constants of n-hexylcyanobiphenyl (C6H 13-Ph-Ph-C=N) were determined from the voltage (U) dependence of the capacitance (C) of the planar nematic cell with a small molecular pretilt angle. The capacitance changes are due to distortion of the director n driven by the applied electric field. K u was obtained from the Freedericksz threshold voltage (C/th) and K 33 from the C(U) dependence above the threshold voltage by means of the method proposed by Gruler et al. and Uchida et al. The significance of the pretilt angle in the determination of K-m is discussed.

 Title    Elastic Constants of Nematic Phenylpyrimidines Determined by Two Different Methods  
 Abstract    A survey of various methods to measure the elastic constants K, of nematic liquid crystals is given. To determine K 3 and the anisotropy of the diamagnetic susceptibility Ax of two members of the 5n-hexyl-2-[4n-alkyloxy-phenyl]-pyrimidines and a mixture of both, we used a combined electro-magneto-optical method, consisting in independent measurements of the optical phase difference in electric and magnetic fields acting on the same cell. The temperature dependence of the K r and K 3 -values for these phenylpyrimidines can be explained by common theories. The Ax data show the same temperature dependence as the values of the orientational order parameter S obtained by 'H-NMR.
