Title    A Sex Attractant for the Green Budworm Moth, Hedya nubiferana
Abstract    The two major components o f the female pheromone blend of H edya nubiferana have been identified as (E, £)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate and (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate. Each compound acts on a specialist receptor type in olfactory hair sensilla of the male antenna. In field screening tests, combinations of the two compounds and dodecanyl acetate were highly attractive to H. nubiferana males. The (Z, £)-8,10 isomer attracted males of H edya ochroleucana.

Abstract    Traps baited with approx. 2:1 mixtures of (£)-, and (Z)-l 1-tetradecenyl acetates caught male Sperchia intrac tana Walker in the field. Analyses o f extracts obtained from virgin female moths revealed the presence of these two compounds, which are presumably the major components of the sex pheromone.

Title    The Pheromone Receptor System o f M ale Eulia ministrana L., with N otes on Other Cnephasiini M oths
Abstract    The antennal Sensilla trichodea o f male Eulia ministrana (Tortricidae: Cnephasiini) contain specialist receptor cells for the sex-attractant components (Z)-9-and (Z)-l 1-tetra-decenyl acetate and the attraction-inhibitors (E)-11 -tetra-decenyl acetate, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, and (Z)-11 -hexa-decenyl acetate. The significance o f the latter two com pounds as potential sex pheromone com ponents in Tortri cidae is considered.

Abstract    Obliquebanded Leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana, and the Redbanded Leafroller, Argyrotaenia velutinana, Moths S tep h en P. F o ster Entom ology Division, D SIR . Mt. A lbert Research C entre, Private Bag, A uckland, New Z ealand W endell L. R oelofs D epartm ent of Entom ology, New York State Agricultural Experim ent Station, Biosynthesis of the m ajor sex pherom one components of the obliquebanded leafroller, (Z)-and (ZT)-ll-tetradecenyl acetates, is shown to proceed by A l l desaturation of myristate as in the related redbanded leafroller. A comparison between the am ounts of deuterium label incorporated into the pherom one com ponents from labelled myristic, palmitic and stearic acids gave a higher level of incorporation for the shorter chain acids, suggesting that A l l desaturation is a faster process than 2 carbon chain-shortening by ß-oxidation.

Title    Secondary Sex Pheromone Components of Choristoneura murinana Hb. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
Abstract    The alkenyl acetates £9-12:Ac, zlll-12:Ac and Zll-14:Ac were identified as minor compo-nents of the C. murinana female pheromone blend by chemical analyses of volatile pheromone gland constituents and potential pheromone precursors, electrophysiological recordings from single receptor cells, and field trapping tests. Gland washes from virgin females contained these compounds at 3%, 10% and 5%. respectively, the amount of the primary pheromone component Z9-12:Ac already reported. A 0.3% addition of either Jll-12:Ac or Zll-14:Ac significantly raised trap captures over Z9-12:Ac alone and a 3-30% addition of either minor component revealed maximum captures, not increased further by including both synergists within the same blend. A functional role of the £9-12: Ac could not be established during this study; 3% of it when combined with the pheromonal ratio mixture of the three other components tended to increase trap captures further whereas in various other mixture combinations the £9-12:Ac strongly reduced captures. These inhibitory effects were more pronounced with attractant blends based on Zll-14:Ac rather than Zlll-12:Ac. Each blend component activated its own type of antennal receptor cell.

Title    Sex Pheromone of the Brazilian Apple Leafroller, Bonagota cranaodes Meyrick (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae)
 Abstract    The female sex pheromone of Bonagota (=Phthteochroa) cranaodes (Meyrick) is a blend of (£,Z)-3,5-dodecadienyl acetate (£ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c) and (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate (Z 9 -1 6 :A c) according to analysis of pheromone -gland extracts and field trapping in apple orchards. This is the first time that £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2:Ac has been identified as a lepidopteran sex pheromone. Traps baited with 100 |ig £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c were attractive over 15 weeks in the field and were as effective as traps baited with virgin females. Addition of Z 9 -1 6 :A c to £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c at ratio of 1:10 had a significantly increase of male moths. The addition of the Z ,E and Z ,Z isomers to rubber septa baited with £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c did not modify B. cranaodes male attrac tion, but 10% of E E enhanced trap catch.
