 Abstract    The interaction between aromatic amines and ATP is based upon an electrostatic attraction o f the protonated am ino groups to the negatively charged phosphate groups o f ATP com bined with a stacking association between the ring systems. The com plexes formed are relatively weak (as­ sociation constants 4 -4 8 M_1), shortlived (life tim e smaller than 0.02 s), and m ainly 1:1 in stoichiometry preferring the terminal phosphate o f ATP as the site o f association. The divalent metal ions M g2+ and Ca2+ bond stronger than the am ines (association constants 1500 and 100 M_1, resp.) prefer the /?-phosphate group changing thereby the geom etry o f the ATP phosphate chain. Thus, they reduce the am ine-ATP association in ternary mixtures.
