 Title    Spin Label Study of Apomembranes and Purple Membranes  
 Abstract    Three spin-labelled fatty acids were used to detect the dynamics of lipid bilayer o f apomem­ branes and purple membranes. It was found that ESR spectra of spin labels bound to apo­ membranes showed a temperature-induced changes rather similar to those seen with purple membranes. At the same time, however, the values of hyperfine splitting parameter 2Tm were lower as compared to purple membranes. The results pointed out that the removal of the retinal from purple membranes affects the dynamics of lipid bilayer and apomembranes were more rigid structure than those of purple membranes.

 Title    Untersuchungen über die Größe, Struktur und Dynamik von Gallensäure/Lecithin-Mischmicellen Size, Structure, and Dynamics of Bile Salt/Lecithin Mixed Micelles  
 Abstract    H errn P rofessor Dr. Walter Boguth zum 60. G ebu rtstag gew id m et The structure and size of lecithin/sodium glycocholate mixed micelles was investigated by quasi­ elastic laser light scattering and spin label techniques. The investigations are in accordance with a bilayer model for these micelles. The order parameter and the phase transition enthalpy of the micellar bilayer were determined. The lateral and rotational diffusion constants of label molecules are compared with the cor­ responding diffusion constants in liposomes.

 Title    Residual Motion of Hemoglobin-Bound Spin Labels as a Probe for Protein Dynamics  
 Abstract    The residual m otion o f spin labels bound to cysteine (393 o f m ethem oglobin and oxyhem oglobin has been analyzed as a function o f temperature and hydration. The rotational diffusion o f the whole protein m olecule has been prevented or restricted by crystallization, lyophilization or by high viscosity o f the solution. The residual motion o f the labels is characterized by an angle o f the limited m otion cone and their rotational correlation time using computer simulations o f the E P R spectra. Two types o f m otion can be separated due to different correlation times and different dependenceson temperature and hydration. O ne o f these m otional mechanisms can be shown to be determ ined by protein fluctuations. Correlation tim es o f these fluctuations decrease from 2 x 10 s s at T = 220 K to 10 9 s at T = 300 K in the sam ples o f high water concentration. Strong correlation betw een the properties of the hydration shell and these fluctuations are observed.
