Title    Interactions between Photosynthetic Pigments Bound to Lipid and Protein Particles. Spectroscopic Properties
Abstract    The spectroscopic (visible) properties of pigment-bearing lipid and protein particles extract ed from milk show that: 1) chlorophylls a and b bound to separate particles can form aggregates provided their relative concentration is high enough. Neither pheophytin a nor ^-carotene, in the same conditions, form observable aggregates. 2) Chlorophylls a and b can co-aggregate when they are bound to the same particles. Pheophytin a as well as /8-carotene seem to prevent the aggregation of chlorophyll a. p-carotene has no effect on the aggregation of chlorophyll b.

Title    Kinetics of the Reaction HOCO + 0 2 in the Gas Phase
Abstract    Using the discharge flow method, the kinetics of the gas phase reaction HOCO + 0 2 products (1) was investigated at room temperature and pressures around p « 2.0 mbar with Far Infrared Laser Magnetic Resonance (FIR-LMR) detection of HOCO, H0 2 , and OH. From the measured concen-tration-versus-time decay profiles of HOCO in the absence and presence of a large excess of 0 2 , the overall rate constant of the reaction was found to be k, (296 K) = (9.9 ±1.5) • 10 11 cm 3 /mol • s. The main reaction channel, which leads to production of H0 2 + C0 2 , could be established.

Title    Millimeter Wave Spectroscopy of Ne-CO
Abstract    The pure rotational 6-type spectrum of the van der Waals complex Ne-CO has been measured using a pulsed jet, intracavity millimeter wave spectrometer. The millimeter wave generation is based on the OROTRON principle. The high sensitivity of the spectrometer allowed measurements of R(J), K = 1 0 transitions between 108 and 150 GHz of the Ne isotopomers 2() Ne-CO and 22 Ne-CO. This new millimeter wave data set together with the microwave data in the literature, i.e. a-type microwave transitions, yield in a fit to an asymmetric rotor a reliable set of ground state constants. These are for 2(, Ne-CO: A = 107127.021(14) MHz, B = 3479.6597(95) MHz, and C = 3039.5387(93) MHz. For both 20 Ne-CO and 22 Ne-CO, a global fit to a near-symmetric rotor was performed, taking into account the infrared and microwave transition frequencies from the literature and the millimeter wave measurements of the present work.

Title    Chromophore Content and Molar Absorptivity of Phytochrome in the Pr Form
Abstract    Quantitative absorption spectra in the visible and UV region were recorded for denaturated phytochrome (P r) and phytochromobilin peptides in comparison with native Pr. The method was tested with C-phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis. Based on known molar absorptivities for denaturated phycocyanin and suitable model compounds, and on the ratio ^niüve/^delrS = 2.9, ^native was determined to be 1 0 2 0 0 0 m _1 cm-1 for one phycocyanobilin chromophore in native phycocyanin. Likewise, N a t iv e was calculated to be 19000 M -1 cm-1. The corresponding ratios for Pr Were ^native/^denatured = 3*4 and A native/-^degraded = 3.7, t h l S yielded ^native = 109000 tO 118000 and eSUfcve = 36000 M _1 cm-1 for phytochromobilin in native P r. This value corresponds to one phytochromobilin per small phytochrome (60000 D) if data from the literature are corrected for the content o f colorless proteins. The latter has been asessed from (i) the purity index (A2g0/A665) and (ii) the contribution o f the phytochromobilin chromophore at 280 nm as derived from model compounds.

Title    5N-Coprobiliverdin, a New Model Chromophore
Abstract    The synthesis of l5N-labeled coprobiliverdin III, a bile pigm ent with four conjugated pyrrole nuclei and four carboxylic acid side chains, is described. C oprobiliverdin is structurally characterized by chemical and various spectroscopic m ethods (e.g. chrom ic acid degradation, UV-vis-, IR-, mass spectroscopy). The results of 15N N M R studies reveal the potential value of this compound as a probe for structural interactions in biliproteins and as a reference for the future investigation of natural bile pigments deriving
