 Title    The Spectral Sensitivity of the Ocelli of Calliploora (Diptera)  
 Abstract    The spectral sensitivity of the ocelli of C alliphora was determined by means of the electroretino-gram (ER G). Sensitivity is high in the spectral range from 340 to 450 nm ; with still increasing wavelengths it rapidly decreases. Analysis of the shape of the ERG resulting from stimuli of dif­ ferent wavelengths, as well as experiments with selective chromatic adaptation, indicate that there is mainly one spectral mechanism contributing to the response.

 Title    E lectrophysiological Properties of R7 and R8 in D ipteran Retina  
 Abstract    Intracellular recording and dye injection have directly demonstrated the absolute and spectral sensitivities of R7 and R8 in the eye of Calliphora. R8 has major peak of sensitivity at 547 nm with less than half the bandwidth of a theoretical rhodopsin, and a subsidiary peak at 358 nm. R7 is confirmed as being an ultraviolet receptor. Both have absolute sensitivities similar to those of R l —6. These results are inconsistent with the scotopic (R l —6), photopic (R7 and R8) theory of fly vision.

 Title    Properties of Single Cells in Posterior Lateral Eyes of Jumping Spiders  
 Abstract    Properties of single cells in the posterior lateral (PL) eyes of the jum ping spider Plexippus validus are described. Only one spectral class of cells was encountered and the spectra sensitivity was indistinguishable from that measured from the ERG , both peaking at ca. 535 nm. Angular sensi­ tivity (width of angular sensitivity function at the 50% level) averaged .89° ± .12°, the smallest value being .77°. Absolute sensitivity (reciprocal of the number of quanta of peak wavelength, on axis required to generate a 50% response) averaged 1.43 + 2 .5 X 1 0 -11 q _ 1 ,cm2,s. A ll cells studied were sensitive to the plane of polarised light. The per­ formance of receptors in the PL eyes is compared with that of receptors in the compound eyes of diurnal insects. It is concluded that the single lens eye system of spiders is in ­ herently superior in design to the insect compound eye.

 Title    Phototaktische Reaktion von Asplanchna priodonta bei monochromatischem Reizlicht Phototactic Reactions of Asplanchna priodonta to Monochromatic Light  
 Abstract    1. The spectral sensitivity curve of the positive phototactic reaction of the rotifer Asplanchna priodon ta has a triple peak. The maxima lie at 363 nm, 453 nm and 552 nm. 2. In the shortest wavelength tested and in the area of 453 to 594 nm was the precision of the phototactic orientation found to be high. In between lies a minimum at 395 nm, above 594 nm occurs a rapid decrease in phototactic orientation. 3. No wavelength specific differences in the way of orientation were found when using dif­ ferent monochromatic test light stimuli. This leads the same mixture of photopigments.
