 Title    A Diosgenin Tetrasaccharide from Cestrum nocturnum  
 Abstract    A new m onodesm osidic spirostanol glycoside extracted from the fresh leaves of Cestrum nocturnum was identified as spirost-5-ene-3-ol, [3/3,25/?]-3-0-[{a-L-rham nopyranosyl-(l— 4)-a-L-rham nopyranosyl-(l^-2)}-a-L-rham nopyranosyl-(l—*4)-/?-D-glucopyranoside. The name proposed for this saponin is nocturnoside B. The structure elucidation was done on the basis of 1 D and 2 D spectroscopic studies [DEPT. HeteroCOSY, HMBC, COSY-45°, H O H A H A ] and chemical analysis.

 Title    New Cembranoids from Burley T ob acco  
 Abstract    The liquid C 0 2-extract of aged burley tobacco was investigated for its content of diterpenoids, which are considered as im portant precursors of flavour constituents. Among several cembranoids, already known from various tobacco types, 4,8-dimethyl-8-hydroxy-l l-(l-methyl-ethyl)-14-oxo-pentadeca-5,9-diene-4-olide, a new natural product, could be identified, evidently originating from 2,6,11-cem-bratriene-4,8-diol by oxidative cleavage of the 11,12-double bond with subsequent cyclization to the seco-lactone 14.

 Title    Nicotinic Acid Conjugation in Plants and Plant Cell Cultures of Potato (Solanum tuberosum)  
 Abstract    S usanne K öster, B a rb a ra U p m eier, D ie te r K om ossa, an d W olfgang B arz Lehrstuhl für Biochem ie der Pflanzen, W estfälische W ilhelm s-U niversität M ünster, Hindenburg-platz The conversion o f nicotinic acid to N-conjugates by either m ethylation or glucosylation has been investigated in leaves and tubers from potato plants, in potato callus and suspension cultures and in plants regenerated from such cultures. While nicotinic acid-N-glucosyltransferase activity could be detected in the cells and tissues at each level of differentiation, the N-methyltransferase (trigonelline formation) was only found in organized leaf tissue.

 Title      
 Abstract    A ssem El-Shazlya c, A n d reas Teic, L udger W itteb, M äher E l-D om iatya and M ichael W inkc a D epartm ent The alkaloid composition of H yoscyam us boveanus, H. desertorum, H. muticus and H. albus was investigated by capillary GLC and GLC-mass spectrometry. Altogether 39 alka­ loids of the tropane and pyrrolidine types were identified. Several alkaloids were found in the different species for the first time, e.g., 22 alkaloids in H. boveanus, 13 in H. desertorum, 24 in H. muticus and 4 in H. albus. 3ß-Hyoscyamine, dehydrohyoscyamine, phyllalbine, 3a-phenylacetyltropane, phenylacetylscopine as well as phygrine and 2,3-diacetonyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidine are apparently new for the genus Hyoscyamus. Alkaloid profiles and alkaloid contents of flowers, fruits, leaves, stems and roots were determined and their chemoecological functions discussed.
