Title    Bestimmung der relativen Flüchtigkeit von Sexualpheromonen von Schmetterlingen mittels Closed Loop Stripping* Determination of Relative Volatility of Lepidoptera Sex Pheromones by Closed Loop Stripping
Abstract    By means o f closed loop Stripping the relative evaporation rates o f monounsaturated C U)-C|6-acetates and C l(l-C12-alcohols have been determined. The results o f stimulus released demonstrate the different volatilities of pheromone compounds which should be taken in ac count with certain biotests and physiological studies.

Title    Direct Measurement of the Flight Behavior of Male Moths to Calling Females and Synthetic Sex Pheromones
Abstract    The approach of male Lobesia botrana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in the wind tunnel to a source of sex pheromone was studied using two video cameras connected to image processing equipment. Three-dimensional records demonstrate that the flight to calling females is quite direct compared to the zigzag flight reported for other species. Convoluted paths displaying bimodal distribution of track and course angles were only obtained with a synthetic phero mone blend consisting of £'-7,Z-9-dodecadienyl acetate, £'-7,Z-9-dodecadien-l-ol and Z-9-dodecenyl acetate at the proportions of 1 /0.2/0.05. This suggests that this blend is still subopti-mal and that zigzag flight may be due to a lack of precision in upwind motion caused by inade quate composition of the stimulus.

Abstract    Traps baited with approx. 2:1 mixtures of (£)-, and (Z)-l 1-tetradecenyl acetates caught male Sperchia intrac tana Walker in the field. Analyses o f extracts obtained from virgin female moths revealed the presence of these two compounds, which are presumably the major components of the sex pheromone.

Title    Drosophila M ales Produce a Pheromone which Inhibits Courtship
Abstract    Normal Drosophila males produce a volatile pheromone which inhibits courtship. This chemical cue is not identical to the pheromone made by mated female flies, which also inhibits male sexual behavior. Mutant olfC males, which fail to respond to several organic compounds, are not inhibited by the pheromone made by males; hence, unlike normal sexually mature males, olfC males court each other vigorously.

Title    Sex Pheromone Components in the New Zealand Greenheaded Leafroller Planotortrix excessana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
Abstract    Planotortrix excessana was found to include moths o f two distinct pherom one-types which were not mutually attractive. Tetradecyl acetate and (Z)-8-tetradecenyl acetate were identified as pheromone components in one, and two other tetradecenyl acetates, probably (Z)-5-and (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate, in the other. By contrast with other pherom ones reported from the tribe Archipini, A 11-tetradecenyl compounds were not found in either pherom one-type.

Title    The Sex Pheromone of the Silver Y Moth Chrysodeixis eriosoma (Doubleday) in New Zealand on leave at the En tomology D ivision
Abstract    An investigation o f the sex pherom one o f the N ew Zealand Silver Y Moth Chrysodeixis erio soma (Doubleday), formerly described as Plusia chalcites (Esper) resulted in the identification o f the major active components as 7Z-and 9Z-dodecenyl acetates, in approx. 97:3 ratio. This blend was attractive to C. eriosoma m ales in the field and in a laboratory flight tunnel. 5Z-D odecenyl acetate and 7Z-dodecenyl alcohol inhibited this response in the field. C. eriosoma was also attract ed to the 5:1 blend o f 7Z-dodecenyl acetate and 9Z-tetradecenyl acetate reported as the phero mone o f Chrysodeixis (Plusia) chalcites in the western Palaearctic. Specialist receptor cells for all 5 compounds mentioned were found in m ale antennal sensilla in both species.

Title    Secondary Sex Pheromone Components of Choristoneura murinana Hb. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
Abstract    The alkenyl acetates £9-12:Ac, zlll-12:Ac and Zll-14:Ac were identified as minor compo-nents of the C. murinana female pheromone blend by chemical analyses of volatile pheromone gland constituents and potential pheromone precursors, electrophysiological recordings from single receptor cells, and field trapping tests. Gland washes from virgin females contained these compounds at 3%, 10% and 5%. respectively, the amount of the primary pheromone component Z9-12:Ac already reported. A 0.3% addition of either Jll-12:Ac or Zll-14:Ac significantly raised trap captures over Z9-12:Ac alone and a 3-30% addition of either minor component revealed maximum captures, not increased further by including both synergists within the same blend. A functional role of the £9-12: Ac could not be established during this study; 3% of it when combined with the pheromonal ratio mixture of the three other components tended to increase trap captures further whereas in various other mixture combinations the £9-12:Ac strongly reduced captures. These inhibitory effects were more pronounced with attractant blends based on Zll-14:Ac rather than Zlll-12:Ac. Each blend component activated its own type of antennal receptor cell.

Title    Sex Pheromone of the Brazilian Apple Leafroller, Bonagota cranaodes Meyrick (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae)
 Abstract    The female sex pheromone of Bonagota (=Phthteochroa) cranaodes (Meyrick) is a blend of (£,Z)-3,5-dodecadienyl acetate (£ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c) and (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate (Z 9 -1 6 :A c) according to analysis of pheromone -gland extracts and field trapping in apple orchards. This is the first time that £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2:Ac has been identified as a lepidopteran sex pheromone. Traps baited with 100 |ig £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c were attractive over 15 weeks in the field and were as effective as traps baited with virgin females. Addition of Z 9 -1 6 :A c to £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c at ratio of 1:10 had a significantly increase of male moths. The addition of the Z ,E and Z ,Z isomers to rubber septa baited with £ 3 ,Z 5 -1 2 :A c did not modify B. cranaodes male attrac tion, but 10% of E E enhanced trap catch.
