| The spinel series Fe2V04-ZnV204 and Fe2V04-ZnFe204 have been prepared and investigated. The lattice constants and Mössbauer spectra lead to a distribution of cations which proves that Fe2V04 is a partially inverse spinel with Fe(II) and Fe(III) on the tetrahedral site. The Seebeck effect is interpreted with a model of both tetrahedral and octahedral conduction based on charge hopping. | | |

| From lattice constants and M össbauer data the valence distribution and an energy-level diagram o f the spinel system F e(F evV 2_t) 0 4 have been derived. In the range 0.3 < x ^ 1.5 the transition from normal to inverse spinels takes place. The M ößbauer spectra with 1.0 < jc ^ 2.0 consist o f two sets o f sextets corresponding to tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Typical values o f isom er shift and internal m agnetic field strength due to the different environments o f the iron ion result from the superim posed sextets o f the octahedral site pattern. Neighbouring V ions enhance the conduc tion electron density and diminish the strength o f the magnetic interaction. M ößbauer data, Seebeck coefficients and activation energies lead to a m odel of both tetrahedral and octahedral conduction based on charge hopping. For F e1.gV 1. | 0 4 there exists only one iron species. | | |
