 Title    Azadirachtin-Induced Sterilization in Mature Females of Rhodnius prolixus  
 Abstract    The effects of azadiraehtin A, given orally, on the reproduction of mature females of Rhodnius prolixus were studied. Azadiraehtin A caused a reduction in oocyte growth and consequently in the egg production in a dose-dependent manner. Eggs layed had no alteration in their viabilities. A significant correlation between these effects and the titers of both vitellogenin in the haemolymph and vitellin in the ovaries was observed. Ecdysteroid titers in haemolymph and ovaries, as determined by radioimmunoassay, were decreased by this treatment. In vitro analysis suggested that azadiraehtin may directly interfere in ovarian ecdysteroid production. The signifi-cance of these findings in relation to the mode of action of azadiraehtin is discussed.

 Title    Chagas' Disease and its Insect Vector. Effect of Azadirachtin A on the Interaction of a Triatomine Host (Rhodnius prolixus) and its Parasite (Trypanosoma cruzi)  
 Abstract    The E D 50 for moulting inhibition by injected azadirachtin A is for fourth instar larvae of all the triatomines, Triatoma vitticepes, T. pseudomaculata, T. maculata, T. brasiliensis, T. lecticularis, T. matogrossensis, T. infestans, Rhodnius prolixus, R. neglectus, R. robustus, Panstrongvlus megi-stus, and P. herrera in the range of 10—25 ng/larva. In Rhodnius prolixus, the survival of T. cruzi was studied after treatment with the drug. If the trypomastigotes were fed in presence of 1.0 (.ig aza­ dirachtin A/ml blood, the number of parasites decreased near to the limit of detection within 30 days. If the drug was applied 20 days after T. cruzi infection, it still completely abolished the parasite in the host's gut within the subsequent 20 days. The same holds true if the insect larvae were pretreated with azadirachtin A 20 days before the subsequent infection with T. cruzi. Azadirachtin A, if applied at the dose of 1 (.tg/ml, did not affect the hemolytic activity of the crop contents orthe proteinase content of the intestine. A parallel between azadirachtin effects on the hormone balance of the host and growth inhibition of the parasite is discussed on the basis of the present results.

 Title    Feeding and Molt Inhibition by Azadirachtins A, B, and 7-Acetyl-azadirachtin A in Rhodnius prolixus Nymphs  
 Abstract    Development The antifeedant and antimolting effects of azadirachtins A and B, and of a synthetic derivative, 7-acetyl-azadirachtin A were examined. Given through a blood meal, the effective dose (E D 50) for the antifeedant effect ranged from 25 to 30 ng/ml of blood for the three compounds. ATP, a phagostimulant, also given orally, reversed the antifeedant action of azadirachtin A. The ED50 values for molt inhibition were 0.04, 0.015, and 0.45 (ig/ml of blood for azadirachtins A, B, and 7-acetyl-azadirachtin A, respectively. The mechanisms of feeding and molt inhibitions by azadirachtin A B, and its 7-acetyl-azadirachtin A derivative are discussed.
