 Title    The Determ ination o f Prolam ellar Bodies and Saponins in E tioplasts and Leaves o f A vena sativa L  
 Abstract    Prolamellar body tubules in etioplasts are composed mainly of two saponins. The determination o f these sapo-nins in leaves, etioplasts or subfractions of etioplasts is re­ commended to evaluate the concentration of these tubules in a given fraction. Using a densitometer after TLC-separa-tion of the saponins measurements are carried out in a short time with high accurancy. Also the absolute concen­ tration of these saponins can be determined. Problems in the quantification o f the saponins in leaf samples can be overcame with filters of different wavelengths.

 Title    Esterification of Chlorophyllide in Prolamellar Body (PLB) and Prothylakoid (PT) Fractions from ^4 vena sativa Etioplasts  
 Abstract    Etioplast membranes were fractionated into enriched prothylakoid (PT) and prolamellar body fraction (PLB) by known procedures [2]. The photoconversion o f Protochlide to Chlide was 77% in the PT fraction but only 65% in the PLB fraction with optimum NADPH concentrations. The subsequent esterification reaction proceeds in both fractions indicating that the enzyme chlorophyll synthetase is present in both fractions. In the PLB fraction, 10-15% more Chip is formed than in the PT fraction. It is concluded that the concentration of the endogenous phytol precursor is higher in the membranes still present in the PLB fraction than in the PT fraction.

 Title    Digitonin Precipitable Sterols Inducing the Aggregation o f Prolamellar Body-Like Structures from Completely Dissolved P L B Components  
 Abstract    Completely dissolved lipids o f a prolamellar body/primary thylakoid (PLB/PT) fraction from etiolated Avena sativa plastids were reaggregated in vitro. The analysis o f the originating tubular structures showed a qualitative identity in their lipid content with that o f the native PLB/PT fraction. Reaggregation experiments also showed that not all lipids constituting the PLB are neces­ sary to build up the tubular structures. Only avenacosids A and B together with 3-/?-hydroxy-ste-rols are the obligatory structural components.

 Title    Protochlorophyllide Photoconversion Initiates the Transformation of Reaggregated Prolamellar Body Tubules in vitro  
 Abstract    Completely dissolved components o f native prolam ellar body/prim ary thylakoids PLB/PT were induced to reaggregate into tubular structures in vitro. Incubation o f these pchlide con­ taining PLB-like tubules under red light with N A D PH : pchlide oxidoreductase led to a specific association of the enzyme protein to the tubules. Photoconversion of the pigment initiates the dispersal of reaggregated PLB-tubules as indicated by changes in the content of their main constituent saponin.
