Title    Composition of Propolis in Oxfordshire, U.K. and its Relation to Poplar Bud Exudate
Abstract    Propolis balsam from four locations in Oxfordshire was analysed. The balsam was qualitatively similar but showed large quantitative differences in composition. These quan-titative differences are related to the bud exudate composi-tion of the poplars from which balsam was gathered.

Title    Esters of Caffeic Acid with Aliphatic Alcohols in Bud Exudate of Populus nigra
Abstract    A fraction of poplar bud exudate was analyzed by GC/MS and the novel aliphatic hydrocarbon esters 2-methylpropyl-, 2-methyl-2-propenyl-, 2-methylbutyl-, 3-methylbutyl-, 2-methyl-2-butenyl-, 4-methylpentyl-, (5)-methylhexyl-and 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienyl(geranyl)-caffeate were identified.

Title    Identification by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry of 150 Compounds in Propolis
Abstract    Propolis was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for both its headspace volatiles and for the less volatile com ponents o f its alcoholic extract (propolis balsam). 181 peaks were located o f which 171 representing 150 compounds were identified, including 28 identified in propolis for the first time. The majority o f compounds were typical o f poplar bud exudate.

Title    Relation of "Antimicrobial" Compounds Present in Poplar Bud Exudate to Disease Resistance by Poplars
Abstract    Bud exudates from 9 poplars showing a range o f resistance to bacterial canker and poplar rust were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the com ponents o f the bud exudate identified. Those compounds previously reported in the literature to have notable antimicrobial activity were listed and the quantities present in the bud exudates o f the speci mens analyzed were compared. N o correlation was observed between the am ounts o f these com pounds and the known resistance o f the poplars to bacterial canker or rusts.
