| On the Pigmentation of the Pollen of | | | Abstract
| N o th o fa g u s a n ta rc tic a (Forst.) Oerst. (Fagaceae) E ckhard W ollenw eber Extraction o f pollen o f N othofagus antarctica with acid hydrolysis yields kaem pferol, quercetin, the rare flavonol sexangularetin, and naringenin. The tetrahydroxy-chalcone isosalipurpol is shown for the first tim e to occur in such high amount as free aglycone in mature pollen; it yields na ringenin in usual extraction procedures. The bright yellow coloration o f the pollen is due to the presence o f isosalipur pol and sexangularetin. | | |

| Light-Dependent Changes in the Lipid and Fatty Acid Composition of Phycocyanin-Free Photosynthetic Lamellae of Synechococcus | | | Abstract
| The growth o f Synechococcus at different intensities o f white and red light caused changes in the pigment composition. The ratio of chlorophyll a to phycocyanin varied from 1:8,2 in LWLI-grown cells to 1:1,4 in cells grown at HW LI and to 1:15,7 in cultures exposed to HRLI. Acyl lipids were quantitatively determ ined and fatty acids o f the individual lipid classes analysed by GLC. Phycocyanin-free photosynthetic lam ellae were obtained by fractional centrifugation. No variation was found in the acyl lipid composition of the m em brane preparations. These all contained M G D G , D G D G , SQDG and PG as components. In all the lipids investigated, palmitic, hexadecenoic and octadecenoic acids m ade up to more than 90% of total fatty acids. The pattern Of these "m^jor components w ithin the lipids from the different cultures depended on the light used. N o large differences were detected between zones obtained from LWLI and HRLI isolated membranes, whereas density gradient centrifugation of those from HWLI-grown cells resulted in a completely different pattern o f bands. The variations in lipid and fatty acid composition are discussed with respect to changes observed in lipid composition of whole cells and the results reported on tem perature dependent shifts in lipid fluidity in cyanobacteria. | | |

| Photosynthetic Adaptation in Synechococcus Cells | | | Abstract
| The cyanobacterium Synechococcus (Anacystis nidulans, strain L 1401-1) grown under different light conditions showed variations in pigmentation. Ratios of photosynthetic pigments and the effect on quantum requirement and oxygen evolution were studied. An increase in the ratio of chlorophyll a forms with absorption maxima in the far red regime to total chlorophyll a forms was observed in cells grown in strong white light. The quantum efficiency of orange light (637 nm) -absorbed by phycocyanin — was higher after growth of Synechococcus in white than | | |

| Effect of Light Intensity on Photosynthetic 14C 0 2 Fixation of A nabaena flos -aquae | | | Abstract
| The cyanobacterium Anabaena flos-aquae (strain 1444) grown at different intensities o f white light (900. 3500 and 30000 lux) showed changes in the content and com position o f the pigments. Phycocyanin was more affected by high light conditions during growth than chlorophyll a. In comparison to in low white light grown cyanobacteria num ber o f phycobilisom es and thylakoids decreased under strong light. A dim inution o f 14C 0 2 fixation, total am ino acid content, glutam ic acid and glutamine pools was found in strong white light grown cells. Under these conditions the majority o f l4C-labelling was measured in sugar phosphates. After pressure treatment a marked increase o f 14C-incorporation into am ino acids could be obtained. Results were discussed with reference to regulation o f buoyancy in Anabaena flos-aquae. | | |
