 Title    Inhibitors of Photosynthetic E lectron Transport. The Properties of D iazidodialkylbenzoquinones  
 Abstract    The potential photoaffinity reagents 2,5-diazido-3-methyl-6-isopropyl-l,4-benzoquinone (DAZMIB) and 2,5-diazido-3,6-dimethyl-l,4-benzoquinone (DAZDMQ), which are analogs of the well-known inhibitor 2,5-dibromo-3-methyl-6-isopropyl-1,4-benzoquinone (DBMIB), block photosynthetic electron transport in spinach chloroplasts. On irradiation, at relatively high concentrations, DAZMlB inhibits electron flow irrevers­ ibly. However, when [3H] DAZDMQ was photolyzed with chloroplasts, no labeling of the membrane proteins was ob­ served. Rearrangements of the nitrenes derived from the oxidized or reduced azidoquinones that might account for this behaviour are discussed.

 Title    Herbicide and Plastoquinone Binding to Photosystem II  
 Abstract    In plastoquinone-depleted thylakoids "D C M U -typ e" herbicides generally have a lower binding affinity as compared to control thylakoids, with the exception o f D C M U itself. Contrary, binding properties o f phenolic herbicides are not affected by plastoquinone depletion. D C M U in plastoquinone-depleted thylakoids can be displaced from the m em brane by various substituted 1,4-benzoquinones, including plastoquinone-1. Labeling patterns by azido-atrazine are com pared for thylakoids, plastoquinone-depleted thylakoids, and different photosystem II preparations from spinach and Chlamydomonas. Azido-atrazine tags a 3 2 -3 4 kD a protein, which seems to be different from another 3 2 -3 4 kDa protein which is preferentially labeled by a plastoquinone-azide.

 Abstract    /-C o m p le x by the Hydrophobic Reagent 3-(Trifluorom ethyl)-3-(/n-[125I]iodophenyl)-diazirine W alter O ettm eier, In isolated spinach thylakoids the hydrophobic photo­ reactive probe 3-(trifluoromethyl)-3-(m-[I25I]iodophenyl-diazirine almost exclusively labels the photosystem I reac­ tion center and the light-harvesting chlorophyll alb protein. In isolated cytochrome b6//-complex, all four components of the complex get labeled, but to a different extent. The amount of labeling in the protein components is correlated to the number of polypeptide segments embedded in the membrane system.
