 Title    Effect of Cinnamic and Acrylic Acids' Derivatives on Luminol-Enhanced Chemiluminescence of Neutrophils  
 Abstract    Fourteen derivatives o f cinnamic and acrylic acids were evaluated for their ability to modu­ late chemiluminescence, evoked by neutrophils that had been exposed to luminol and phorbol-myristate-acetate. Compounds with one or two hydroxyl groups on the phenyl ring demon­ strated significant inhibition o f the chemiluminescence, but this inhibition was diminished by methoxylation. Saturation of the double bond in the aliphatic chain of cinnamic acid at C6 -enhanced the chemiluminescence to a small degree. All three acrylic acid derivatives demon­ strated a marked inhibition of the luminol chemiluminescence, indicating that characteristics of the heterocyclic ring is of utmost importance in this activity.

 Title    Modulating Luminol-Dependent Chemiluminescence of Neutrophils by Flavones  
 Abstract    The effect o f 14 flavones on luminol-dependent chemiluminescence o f neutrophils was stud­ ied in vitro. Chemiluminescence was used in this study as an indicator for the production o f a reactive oxygen species by neutrophils, stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate. While fla-vone-8-acetic acid, and most o f the com pounds tested, inhibited chemiluminescence, flavone and its 5-hydroxy-7-methoxy derivatives enhanced it by up to 150%. The m ost active inhibi­ tors o f photon emission were the glycosides. These results indicate that lipophilicity and some structural determinants modulate the chemiluminescent capacity o f neutrophils.

 Title    Healing Process Induced by a Flavonic Fraction of Bidens aurea on Chronic Gastric Lesion in Rat. Role of Angiogenesis and Neutrophil Inhibition  
 Abstract    The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of the healing process mediated by the flavonic fraction of Bidens aurea on chronic gastric ulceration induced by 5% acetic acid in rats. The diethyl ether extract (125 and 62.5 mg kg-1 body weight) was administered in a single doses, 7 and 14 days after provocation of lesions. O ur results demonstrated that both doses significantly decreased the macro and microscopic ulcer index. Usually after 14-days treatment the lesions were found completely covered with regenerative epithelium and also an important proliferation of blood vessels was observed. Myeloperoxidase (M P O) activity was assayed and used as an index of leucocyte infiltration. Application of acetic acid pro­ duced a significant increase of this activity 7 days after induction of chronic injury. A d m in ­ istration of 125 mg kg 1 of the ether extract provoked a sharp reduction on the enzymatic activity at the same period. After 14 days, this decrease was higher with both doses (p<0.001). In addition, the macroscopic examination showed a drastic reduction of leucocyte infiltration in treated groups. These results suggest that the recovery of vascularization of the ulcerated area and the decrease of neutrophil infiltration are involved in the antiulcerogenic effect of the flavonoid fraction of Bidens aurea.

 Title    Anti-Oxidant Mechanisms Involved in Gastroprotective Effects of Quercetin  
 Abstract    The anti-ulcerogenic and anti-oxidant effects of various flavonoids have been frequently reported. We investigated the cytoprotective properties of quercetin, a natural flavone, in gastric mucosal injury induced by 50% ethanol, since in this experimental model the patho­ genesis of the lesions has been related with production of reactive oxygen species. The in­ volvement of neutrophil infiltration and the capacity of this flavonoid to restrain the oxida­ tive process produced in the gastric tissue after ethanol administration were also investigated. Oral pretreatment with the highest dose of quercetin (200 mg/kg), 120 min before absolute ethanol was the most effective anti-ulcer treatment. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the gastric mucosa, an index of lipid peroxidation, were increased by ethanol injury, but the increase was inhibited by the administration of 200 mg/kg of quercetin. This dose also induced a significant enhancement in the levels of mucosal non-protein SH compounds (im­ portant anti-oxidant agents) and in glutathione peroxidase activity. Exposure of the gastric mucosa to 50% ethanol induced a significant increase in myeloperoxidase activity, an index of neutrophil infiltration. Flowever, quercetin was not able to modify the increase in enzy­ matic activity generated by the necrotizing agent. The activity of superoxide dismutase en­ zyme involved in several antioxidant processes was also not significantly modified after quer­ cetin treatment. These results suggest that the anti-ulcer activity of quercetin in this experimental model could be partly explained by the inhibition of lipid peroxidation, through decrease of reactive oxygen metabolites. However, the inhibition of neutrophil infiltration or the increase of su­ peroxide dismutase activity does not appear to be involved in gastroprotective effect of this flavonoid.
