 Title    Synthese und Kristallstruktur des Lanthan-Titanat-Tellurats LaTi  
 Abstract    (Ti0 2 5Te0j 5)O6 und seine Verwandtschaft mit PbSb20 6 und Sr(MnTe)06 Synthesis and Crystal Structure of the Lanthanum Titanate Tellurate LaTi(Ti0 25Te0 75) 0 6 and its Relationship to PbSb20 6 and Sr(M nTe)06 L. Single crystals of LaTi(Ti0 25T e o .75) 0 6 have been prepared by solid state reactions. X-ray investigations led to trigonal symmetry, space group C3-P3 , a = 5.141(10), c = 5.218(10) A, Z = 1. The compound is characterized by a predominantly ordered distribution of Ti4+ and Te6+. Typical features of the crystal structure are staggered layers containing edge connected T i0 6 and (Ti,Te)06 octahedra. The layers are connected by La3+ ions receiving an octahedral coordination by the surrounding oxygen ions. The relationships to the PbSb20 6 type and the recently described compound Sr(M nTe)06 are discussed.

T h e rm o d y n a m ic A n a ly s is o f S o lu b ility M e a s u r e m e n ts : L a (0 H) M(C 0 Dedicated to Prof. Hitoshi Ohtaki on the occasion of his 60th birthday The aqueous solubilities of La(OH)p^(COaJjA 0.1 H20, basic lanthanum carbonate of ancylite type, have been investigated as a function of ionic strength at 25.0 °C. The stoichiometric solubility constants defined by log* K1 0 = log [La3 + ] + 1.1 log pco — 3 log [H+1 have the values 11.10, 11.32, 11.42, 11.63, and 11.70 for / = 0.1, 0.25, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mol kg (Na)C104 respectively. The extrapolation to infinite dilution using the Pitzer equations resulted in a "thermodynamic" solubility constant, log* K° 0 = 10.48 ± 0.08. This in turn led to the Gibbs energy of ancylite formation: Af G f98 {La(OH)08(CO3)11 0.1 H20} = -1.531.5 kJ mol-1.

 Title    Closure o f a Rapidly Exchanging Calcium Compartment in Rat Cardiac Myocytes by Lanthanum  
 Abstract    Enzymatically isolated myocytes from adult rats were used to measure 45C a-uptake from salt media o f reduced Ca2+-content (0.1 m M) with normal (4 m M) or elevated (20 m M) potas­ sium concentrations. Ca2+-uptake was interrupted by filtration followed by rapid chasing the filter with salt solutions containing no Ca2+, 2 m M Ca2+ or 2 m M La3+. Rate and extent o f 45C a-uptake o f resting cells were found to be 3-fold enhanced when chas­ ing was performed with La3+-containing media. In contrast La3+ does not affect Ca2+-ex-change o f depolarized cells, the fluxes o f which approximate rates sufficiently high for contrac­ tion activation and that are sensitive to Ca2+-channel blockers. The effect o f La3+ on resting cells suggests the existence o f a small rapidly exchanging La3+-sensitive Ca2+-compartment lo­ cated adjacent to the plasma membrane. This compartment is though to be either closed or has become La3+-insensitive in activated cells. The subsarcolemmal cysternae o f the SR, the so-called "peripheral couplings" are most likely the morphological substrate o f this com part­ ment.
