 Title    Iridoid Glucosides from Phlomis tuberosa L. and Phlomis herba-ventis L  
 Abstract    A new iridoid glucoside, 5-desoxysesamoside, was isolated from Phlom is tuberosa L. (Lam iaceae) together with three known iridoid glucosides sesamoside, shanziside methyl ester and lamalbid. Lamiide was found in P. herba-ventis ssp. pungens in high concentrations.

 Title    6ß-Hydroxyteuscordin and 2/3-,6/9-Dihydroxyteuscordin Two New Diterpenoids from Teucrium scordium L  
 Abstract    Two new furanoid diterpenes of clerodane type, 6 /9-hydroxyteuscordin (1) and 2/?,6/3-dihydroxyteuscordin (3) have been isolated from Teucrium scordium var. scordium, Lamiaceae. Their structures and stereochemistry have been determined on the basis of chemical reactions and spectroscopic evidence.

 Title    Oviposition Deterrance Activity in Some Lamiaceae Plants against Some Insect Pests  
 Abstract    Acetone extracts of 9 out of 12 plants o f Lamiaceae family exhibited high oviposition deterrance (OD) activity against the potato tuber moth, P. operculella (PTM) 4 of these completely prevented egg laying by the latter and A. aegypti. In case o f PTM this activity persisted for a varying number of days. 3 o f them were also active against D. koenigii and M. domestica. None of the active extracts showed significant antifeedant or repellent activity against any pest species except D. koenigii. It was concluded that except in the case of the latter, the OD activity exhibited was not a corollary of antifeedant or repellent action, as is usually presumed. Magnitude and persistence of OD activity o f at least one plant extract against the PTM was considered sufficient for employment in insectistatic management o f this pest.

 Title    from Sideritis leucantha (Lam iaceae)  
 Abstract    A quantitative and qualitative study of the seasonal var­ iation of free flavone aglycones from Sideritis leucantha (Lamiaceae) has been carried out by means of HPLC. The flavonoid pattern remained unvariable with seasonal varia­ tion supporting flavonoid aglycones as idoneous taxonomic markers. Quantitative variations were observed, being the summer months which yielded a higher content in these compounds. These highly methylated flavone aglycones are located in the leaves surface as part of the excretion mate­ rial.

 Title    Polyphenols in Stachys and Betonica Species (Lamiaceae) Fax: 0 0 3 5 9 2 -7 0 0 -2 2 5 . E-mail: iochnp@bgcict  
 Abstract    Above-ground parts and roots from four Stachys species (S. germanica L., S. sylvatica L. and the Balkan endemics S. thracica Dav. and S. plumosa Griseb.) as well as o f three Betonica species (B. officinalis L. and the Balkan endemics B. bulgarica Deg. et Neic. and B. scardica Griseb.) were screened for phenols (phenylethanoid glycosides, flavonoid glycosides and the phenolic diterpene betolide). Three phenylethanoid glycosides, a flavonoid glycoside and the phenolic diterpene betolide were isolated and identified, most of them for the first time in the investigated species. The results obtained support the view that Stachys and Betonica are well separated genera.

 Title    Hydroxyphenylpyruvate Reductase from Cell Suspension Cultures of Coleus blumei Benth  
 Abstract    Cell suspension cultures o f Coleus blumei Benth. producing high amounts o f rosmarinic acid were used to study the biosynthetic pathway o f this caffeic acid ester. One o f the involved en­ zymes, the hydroxyphenylpyruvate reductase (H PPR), is characterized in this paper. HPPR catalyzes the N A D (P)H dependent reduction o f /^-hydroxyphenylpyruvate to /»-hydroxyphen-yllactate. The enzyme developed maximal activity at an incubation temperature o f 37 °C and at a pH o f 6.5 to 7.0. The reaction proceeded linearly for an incubation time o f 60 min and up to a protein concentration o f 0.2 mg per assay. As electron donor HPPR accepted N A D H and N A D P H with A^m-values o f 190 jim and 95 |im respectively. The enzyme reduced differently substituted hydroxyphenylpyruvates but not ß-phenylpyruvate. The apparent A^m-values for the various substrates were at 10 for /^-hydroxyphenylpyruvate, at 130^xm for 3,4-dihy-droxyphenylpyruvate and at 250 |iM for 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate. HPPR was com petitively inhibited by rosmarinic acid and pyruvate with /^-values o f 210 |iM and 200 |IM respectively. Caffeic acid,/>-coumaric acid and cinnamic acid did not affect the enzyme activity but/>-coumaroyl-CoA inhibited HPPR.

 Title    Zatatriol: A New Aromatic Constituent from Zataria multiflora Ahm ad  
 Abstract    A new isopropyl benzene derivative named as zatatriol (5) and two synthetically known compounds (2 and 7) having the same skeleton have been isolated from the hexane soluble part of a Lamiaceous plant Zataria multiflora. In addition to 2, 5 and 7, som e known constitu­ ents: p-cym ene (1), thymol (3), thymol methyl-ether (4) , /3-sitosterol, stigmasterol, oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, and hexadecanoic acid have also been isolated from the same source. Structures of the isolated constituents were elucidated with the aid of NM R spectroscopy.
