| Biflavonoids, Quinones and Xanthones as Rare Chemical Markers in the Family Iridaceae | | | Abstract
| Amentoflavone has been characterised from leaves of Patersonia glabrata. This is the first report of a biflavone in the Monocotyledoneae. The quinone plumbagin, a characteristic con stituent of three dicotyledonous families, is now found to be a useful marker for the genus Aristea; it also occurs in two Sisyrinchium species and in Sparaxis tricolor. Mangiferin, a C-glucosylxan-thone known previously in the Iridaceae only from Crocus, Iris and Gynandriris has now been found in Eleutherine, Rigidella, Gelasine and Tigridia. results is discussed. | | |

| The Coloration of Gladiolus I. Survey of Anthocyanins in Petals of Gladiolus | | | Abstract
| The six common anthocyanidins found in Gladiolus petals occur in four types o f glycosilation: 3-glucoside, 3-rhamnoglucoside, 3,5-diglucoside, and 3-rhamnoglucoside-5-glucoside. The six monoglucosides appear in minute quantities, whereas any of the other 18 anthocyanins can serve as the m ajor contributor to the coloration of Gladiolus petals. In high performance liquid chrom atographic analyses of petal pigm ent composition o f nine cultivars, it was found that the anthocyanins are grouped on the basis of the aglycon substitution. Thus, pelargonidin appears by itself (group I), cyanidin and peonidin constitute group II, and delphinidin, petunidin, and malvidin group III. | | |

| High Performance Liquid Chromatography of Anthocyanidins as a New Approach to Study Flower Pigment Genetics | | | Abstract
| The described m ethod allows rapid screening and accurate quantification o f anthocyanidins with the aid o f HPLC. Using a linear gradient in 40 m in from 20 to 40% o f solvent B (1.5% phosphoric acid -20% acetic acid — 25% acetonitrile) in solvent A (1.5% phosphoric acid) + B on LiChrosorb RP-8 the com m on six anthocyanidins delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin, pelargonidin, peonidin, and m alvidin were resolved within 40 min. It is demonstrated that acetonitrile is superior to other solvents in resolving m ethoxylated phenolic compounds. The application o f the described m ethod is shown with Gladiolus petals in studies o f flower pigm ent genetics. | | |
