 Title    Chemical Composition of the Wing Gland and Abdominal Hair Pencil Secretions of the Male African Sugarcane Borer, Eldana saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)  
 Abstract    In addition to the previously identified wing gland lactone, eldanolide, and the tail brush components, vanillin and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, several further terpenoid compounds, satu­ rated and unsaturated alcohols and acids, a thioalcohol, as well as two saturated macrocyclic lactones, were identified in the wing gland and tail brush secretions of the male African sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina (Walker). The stalk borer Eldana saccharina W alker is found in a large number of natural host plants in Africa [1]. Since 1970 it has becom e an increasingly serious pest in South African sugarcane fields [2] and it is also a recognized pest of m aize and other cereal crops in West and East African countries [3], Male moths of this insect, in common with other gallerines, have a gland at the base of each fore wing with a duct open­ ing towards the wing tip, as well as a pair of promi­ nent hair pencils on the eighth segm ent [4, 5]. These disseminating structures are assumed to be involved in pherom one com m unication in E. saccharina. The possible use of the synthetic pherom ones for monitoring and/or controlling the insect has led to considerable interest in the identification and syn­ thesis of the pherom one secreted by the male moth. The y-lactone, rra«5,-3 ,7-dim ethyl-6-octen-4-olide (eldanolide) was identified as a com ponent of the wing gland secretion [6 , 7] and several independent syntheses have been elaborated for the natural (3S, 4R) isom er [8—11]. It has been suggested [7, 12] that eldanolide acts as a long-range attractant of the fem ale. Vanillin and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde have been found in the abdominal hair pencil or tail brush secretion and were reported to act as an aphrodisiac [13].  Title    Pheromones of the Scarabaeinae, II*. Composition of the Pheromone Disseminating Carrier Material Secreted by Male Dung Beetles of the Genus Kheper  
 Abstract    Gel electrophoresis o f the white flocculent pheromone disseminating secretions produced by males o f the three dung beetle species, Kheper lamarcki, K. nigroaeneus and K. subaeneus, re­ vealed that three different proteins with molecular masses o f ca. 15 kD a are the major constitu­ ents o f these secretions. The molecular mass o f these com ponents in the secretions o f K. lamarcki and K. nigroaeneus was determined more accurately by 252C f plasma desorption mass spectro­ metry to be 15451 ± 10 and 1 5 4 7 7 ± 10 Da respectively. The N-terminal amino acids in the major proteinaceous component o f the secretions revealed similarities as well as differences in the primary structures o f the proteins secreted by the three species. The am ino acid com posi­ tion o f the secretions o f the three species is closely related. Due to the presence o f large amounts o f aspartic and glutamic acid, and small am ounts o f the basic amino acids, the pro­ teinaceous component o f the carrier material is expected to have a low isoelectric point which, together with the presence o f large amounts o f the hydrophobic amino acids, may impart properties that are to be expected for a carrier material which is used for the dissemination o f inter alia long-chain fatty acids and their esters. Exposure o f bovine pancreas trypsin, bovine albumin and the carrier protein o f K. lamarcki to the vapour o f 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptenoic acid, the major volatile constituent with electro-antennogram activity in the secretion o f this species, followed by quantitative determination o f the acid adsorbed on these proteins, showed that albumin and the carrier protein have an approximately equal affinity for the acid, whereas trypsin retained only about one third o f the amount o f the acid adsorbed on the other two proteins. It was concluded that albumin should be a suitable substitute for the carrier protein in field tests with synthetic constituents o f the abdominal secretion o f these insects.
