 Title    Investigations of Solid Polyborates and their Aqueous Solutions by Raman Spectroscopy  
 Abstract    Raman spectra of solid H3B03, Na2[B405(0H)4] • 8 H20, K[B506(0H)4] • 2 H20 and Na[B(OH)4] were recorded between 300 and 1500 cm -1 as well as of borax in aqueous solutions as a function of concentration and pH. Because of better solubility in water, the Raman spectrum of ammonium tetraborate in aqueous solution was also recorded as a function of pH. For comparisons the Raman spectra of solid (NH4)2[B40s(0H)4] • 2 H20, /S-NH4[B506(0H)4] • 2 HsO, NH4[B506(0H)4] • 0,67 H20 and NH4[B506(0H)4] were con-sidered. In solution, all lines in the Raman spectra could be assigned and the degree of depolarization measured. The assigned Raman frequencies can be used for the identifica-tion of unknown B-0-lines and therefore of unknown borate or polyborate structures.

 Title    Dünnschichtchromatographische Isolierung von Flechtenstoffen und deren Identifizierung Identification of Lichen Substances by Isolation from Thin Layer Chromatogramms  
 Abstract    The use of Eluchrom (Camag, Berlin) for quantitative isolation of liehen substances separated by thin layer chromatography is described. For this method only small quantities of a lichen thallus are needed (less than 0.5 g) to yield sufficient amounts of pure compounds submittable to chemical and spectroscopical identification. In the case of Nephroma cellulosum 0.15 g of the lichen thallus proved to be sufficient to identify 3 main compounds of lichen substances. Microhydrolysis, EI-masspectroscopy, FD-masspectroscopy and UV/VIS-spectroscopy of the isolated compounds confirm­ ed the presence of perlatolic acid, stenosporic acid, glomelliferic acid and zeorin.

 Title    The Exocrinology of the Queen Bumble Bee Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Bombini)  
 Abstract    Chemical analyses are presented of prominent exocrine glands of queen B om bus terrestris including mandibular, labial and hypopharyngeal glands in the head, Dufour's gland and tarsal glands. A plethora o f about 500 substances were identified belonging to various ali­ phatic compounds including hydrocarbons, various classes of esters, alcohols, methyl ketones and fatty acids. A group of chiral hydroxy acids and their butanoic acid esters are reported for the first time in bees.

 Title    Identification and Cloning of a Gene Locus Encoding Peptide Synthetase of Pseudomonas fluorescens by Two Sets of PCR Primers  
 Abstract    A chromosomal locus encoding biosynthetic genes for a putative peptide synthetase of Pseudomonas fluorescens was identified and cloned. To achieve this, two sets of degenerated oligonucleotide primers KAGGA:SGTTG and TG D :LG G were used in PCR. These primers were selected based on highly conserved units of known peptide synthetases involved in adenylation and thiolation regions of Bacillus subtilis. The discrete amplified bands from PCR ca. 300 bp for KAGGA:SGTTG and ca. 500 bp for TGDrLGG proved to be integral part of the genomic DNA of P. fluorescens were cloned and sequenced. Sequence alignments of both fragments confirmed the putative peptide synthetase genes in P. fluorescens. The present study describes the identification and cloning of peptide synthetase genes of P. flu o ­ rescens, which can be used to identify a genetic locus encoding peptide synthetase in other microbial species.

 Title    Hydroxycinnamoyl Esters of Malic Acid in Small Radish {Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus)  
 Abstract    The esters o f /?-coumaric, ferulic and caffeic acid with m alic acid were isolated from leaves, the ester o f sinapic acid with m alic acid from cotyledons o f Raphanus sativus plants via prepara­ tive HPLC. The esters were identified by hydrolyses and follow ing capillary G C , by H -N M R and FAB-MS. Their concentrations in leaves and tubers were determ ined by gradient HPLC on reversed phase material.
