| Multifunctional Mode of Action of Substituted Nitrodiphenylethers in Scenedesmus Cells | | | Abstract
| Nitrodiphenylethers substituted with Cl, CF3, and other comparatively simple substituents are compared with respect to their primary effects on the photosynthetic apparatus. These are direct electron-transport inhibition, energy-transfer inhibition (of ATP synthesis), and pigment bleach ing, the latter accompanied by decrease o f electron transport activity. Certain substituents and their positions at the diphenylether skeleton can be correlated with a particular influence on these phytotoxic effects. The unicellular alga, Scenedesmus, is an appropriate species to fumisch quantitative data on these primary herbicidal modes of action within a 24-h assay period. | | |

| Chlorophyll Proteins and Lipids in Paraquat Treated Sensitive and Resistant Cony za Canadensis Leaves | | | Abstract
| Photosynthetic activity and molecular com position o f thylakoid membranes o f sensitive and atrazine/paraquat coresistant biotypes o f Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq was compared before and after 5 x 10~4 molar paraquat spraying. In contrast to the irreversibly damaged sensitive plants the Rfd values (vitality indices) calculated from parameters o f fluorescence induction curves, and the in vivo C 0 2 fixation in resistant plants showed -after a transitory inhibition -a recovery. Resistant thylakoids contained higher amount o f PS II and LHC II, (i.e. lower relative amount o f CP I) which can be the result o f an adaptation process. Fatty acid com position o f total leaf extract was almost the same in both biotype even after spraying. The amount o f the oligomeric form o f LHCP II decreased in paraquat treated sensitive thylakoids, which was in correlation with the reduction o f A3-transhexadecanoic acid content. Decrease in oligom eric LHCP II and/or special lipids (PG) in sensitive thylakoids may change the association o f LHCP II and photosystem II core as it is evidenced from lowering o f the M g2+ induced changes o f the short wavelength fluorescence intensity and increase in the relative quantum requirement values. The results are discussed in connection with a possible effect o f paraquat on PS II. | | |

| Binding of Triazines and Triazinones in the QB-Binding Niche of Photosystem II | | | Abstract
| A series o f 20 triazines (derivatives o f 2-alkylam ino-4-benzylam ino-6-chloro-l,3,5-triazines) and 37 triazinones (derivatives o f 3-alkyl-4-am ino-6-phenyl-l,2,4-triazin-5-ones) is tested for inhibitory potency in photosynthetic electron flow through photosystem II o f wild type Chla-mydomonas reinhardtii and o f five mutants with aminoacid substitutions in the D 1 protein at valine 219, alanine 251, phenylalanine 255, serine 264, and leucine 275. The data are used for computer modelling o f .the possible location o f the com pounds within a three dimensional model o f the QB-binding niche o f the D 1 protein. | | |
