| from Sideritis leucantha (Lam iaceae) | | | Abstract
| A quantitative and qualitative study of the seasonal var iation of free flavone aglycones from Sideritis leucantha (Lamiaceae) has been carried out by means of HPLC. The flavonoid pattern remained unvariable with seasonal varia tion supporting flavonoid aglycones as idoneous taxonomic markers. Quantitative variations were observed, being the summer months which yielded a higher content in these compounds. These highly methylated flavone aglycones are located in the leaves surface as part of the excretion mate rial. | | |

| The Occurrence of Tryptamine Derivatives in Psilocybe semilanceata | | | Abstract
| The content of tryptamine derivatives in Psilocybe semilanceata, a popular hallucinogenic mushroom, was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Most of the 52 samples have been collected at several localities in Switzerland during a 1—5 year period. The content of psilocybin and baeocystin varied in the range of 0.21—2.02% and 0.05—0.77%, respectively, whereas only traces of psilocin were present. The variability of the alkaloid level depending on origin, year of collection, size and part of mushrooms is discussed. | | |

| Studies on the Chemistry of the Lichen Genus Umbilicaria Hoffm | | | Abstract
| The aromatic com pounds o f more than 400 specimens o f 33 species o f the lichen genus Umbilicaria have been investigated by HPLC. Additionally to gyrophoric, hiascic, lecanoric, ovoic and umbilicaric acids, atranorin, norstictic and stictic acids, the new depside crustinic acid has been found. Structure elucidation o f crustinic acid was made by means o f HPLC cochromatography, N M R , UV and mass spectrometry. N ow the secondary product patterns o f Umbilicaria species are discussed and their significance for systematic purposes is shown. | | |

| Accumulation of Protoporphyrin IX in the Presence of Peroxidizing Herbicides | | | Abstract
| Peroxidizing herbicides were assayed for their capacity to accumulate tetrapyrrole-like com-pounds in the liquid culture medium when growing the xanthophycean alga Bumilleriopsis filifor-mis. We have isolated and purified this compound by HPLC. For identification optical, fluores-cence, NMR and mass spectroscopy were employed. All these techniques showed that the accu-mulation product is protoporphyrin IX. This tetrapyrrole was found, although to a different extent, using either chlorophthalim, oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen or LS 82-556. Accumulation of proto-porphyrin IX caused by peroxidizing compounds was also found in light-grown Bumilleriopsis cells and heterotrophically (dark-)grown Scenedesmus cells, but neither in light-grown Scenedes-mus cells nor in dark-grown Neurospora. | | |
