Title | Physiologische Bedeutung der "Stringent Control" bei Escherichia coli unter extremen Hungerbedingungen Stringent Control and Starvation Survival in Escherichia coli ![]()
Abstract | The viability o f three isogenic re lA +/relA strain pairs of Escherichia coli (C P78/C P79; N F 161/ N F162; CP 107/CP 143) was studied during prolonged starvation for amino acids, glucose or phosphate. A fter am ino acid lim itation we found a prolonged viability o f all relA + strains which synthesized ppGpp. W e suggest that som e ppG pp-m ediated pleiotropic effects o f the stringent response (e.g. glykogen accum ulation, enhanced protein turnover) might be involved in this prolongation o f survival. A fter glucose or phosphate starvation there was no difference in the relA +/relA strains either in the ppG pp content or in the survival.
