 Title    Effect of Preparative Procedures on Ghostcells from Bovine Erythrocytes  
 Abstract    Several methods for the preparation of "white ghosts" or "resealed ghosts" were described in the recent literature. This article compares three methods to prepare white, resealed ghosts from bovine erythrocytes based on the principle of hypotonic lysis. The methods described differ by the removal of hemoglobin from the empty cells. The main difference between the standard centrifu-gation, the gelfiltration and the hollow-fibre diafiltration is the mechanical stress on the leaky membranes after swelling in hypotonic media. Mean cellular volumes, rates of potassium-efflux and the access of impermeable dyes to cytoplasmatic proteins are criteria to differentiate between ghostcell-populations.

 Title    ATP Dependent Uptake of Zinc by Human Erythrocyte Ghosts  
 Abstract    The energy dependence of Zn2+ accumulation by human erythrocytes was studied by preparing resealed ghosts loaded with ATP or AMP. Uptake of Zn2+ was followed by radioactivity or atomic absorption spectroscopy measurements. Zn2+ taken up is not adsorbed by the mem­ brane but transported into the ghosts. Ghosts containing ATP took up more Zn2+ than those con­ taining AMP. The effect is not specific for ATP, however, GTP and CTP showing the same in­ creased uptake. Zn2+ uptake by ATP ghosts can be further drastically enhanced by addition of Cu2+ . Therefore, in spite of the enhancement of Zn2+ uptake by ATP, Zn2+ seems to be accumulated by a passive mechanism even when the ghosts contain ATP. The accumulation is probably brought about by binding of Zn2+ to substances inside the ghosts.

 Title    Inhibition of Lipid Peroxidation in the Erythrocyte Membrane by Quaternary Morpholinium Salts with Antioxidant Function  
 Abstract    The antioxidant activity of five new compounds from a group of quaternary ammonium salts with antioxidant function has been investigated. The effect of the compounds on the degree of lipid oxidation in the erythrocyte membrane subjected to UV radiation was studied. It was found that all the salts used decreased oxidation of the lipids in the erythrocyte mem­ brane. The antioxidant activity of the ammonium salts studied increased with their alkyl chain length. Three compounds with the longest alkyl chains were the most active antioxidants, and their antioxidant properties were comparable to those of a flavonoid extracted from haw­ thorn. The antioxidant effectiveness of the ten-carbon alkyl chain compound was comparable with that of the known antioxidant 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxytoluene (BHT). The least effective antioxidant studied proved to be the eight-carbon alkyl chain compound. The effect of these compounds on fluidity of the erythrocyte membrane has been studied, and for all an increase of fluidity of the membrane was observed. The changes in erythrocyte ghosts fluidity de­ pended both on concentration and type of compound. A fluorimetric study also indicated that rigidity of the erythrocyte membrane increased with degree of its oxidation, but with antioxidants present membrane rigidity increased less.
