| Hydrocarbon Distribution in Epicuticular Waxes of Five Euphorbia Species  | | | Abstract
| The distribution pattern of hydrocarbons in the surface waxes of five species of Euphor biaceae, E.caducifolia, E.helioscopia, E.milii, E.royleana and E.tirucalli was studied. In addi tion to hom ologous series of n-alkanes, minor quantities of unsaturated and branched hy drocarbons were also detected. Some of the branched chain hydrocarbons could be explained as having originated from isoprene units and the substituents corresponding to diterpenes and triterpenes. | | |

| Major Constituents of the Foliar Epicuticular Waxes of Species from the Caatinga and Cerrado  | | | Abstract
| The epicuticular waxes of leaves of four species (Aspidospermci pyrifolium, Capparis yco, Maytenus rigida and Ziziphus joazeiro) from the Caatinga, (a semi-arid ecosystem of N orth east Brazil) and four species (Aristolochia esperanzae, Didymopanax vinosum , Strychnos pseudoquina and Tocoyena formosa) from the Cerrado, (a savanna ecosystem covering one third of the Brazilian territory), were analyzed. Six species contained a high content (above 60 (.ig.cm-2) of wax, four of them from the Caatinga. Triterpenoids and rc-alkanes were the most frequent and abundant constituents found in the species from both habitats. The distri bution of «-alkanes predom inated by homologues with 27, 29, 31 and 33 carbon atoms, dis played no consistent differences between species from the two habitats. Lupeol, ß-amyrin, epifriedelinol and ursolic acid were the triterpenoids found. Triterpenoids clearly predomi nate over alkanes in the waxes from the Cerrado species. The waxes of two evergreen species from the Caatinga yielded «-alkanes as predominant constituents. A comparison of foliar epicuticular waxes of native plants from ecosystems with different hydric constraints is dis cussed. | | |

| Epicuticular Waxes from Leaves and Stems of Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis [Link] Schneider)  | | | Abstract
| Epicuticular waxes were extracted with chloroform from air dried Jojoba leaves and stems. These cuticular waxes consisted o f hom ologues o f «-alkanes, branched alkanes, alkenes, wax esters, aldehydes, acetates, esters, free long chain fatty acids and alcohols. Both leaves and stems showed the same qualitative and quantitative com position with sim ilar distribution patterns. Very long chain and in most cases saturated com pounds are dom inating. The com position o f epicuticular waxes from Jojoba leaves and stem s is quite different from that o f Jojoba pericarp and seed coats and demonstrates an organ specific wax com position o f different aerial parts o f this plant. | | |

| The surface o f leaves and seed coats o f Jojoba is covered with sim ilar am ounts o f epicuticular waxes per surface area. The com position o f these waxes was analysed by chem ical methods, whereas their microscopic structures in situ were revealed by scanning electron m icroscopy. Differences in the chemical structure and com position o f the com plex m ixtures cause differences in the morphological appearance o f wax on the surface o f both organs. The predom inance o f saturated and long chain components in leaf wax results in a crystalline wax layer on this organ. In contrast, the seed coat carries a cover o f non-crystalline fluid consistency. The lower m elting point o f this wax mixture is caused by shorter chain and unsaturated com pounds predom inating on this organ. | | |

| Epicuticular Waxes of Seed Coats from Species of the Genus Cistus L. (Cistaceae)  | | | Abstract
| Epicuticular waxes were extracted with hexane from seed coats o f 16 species from the genus Cistus (Cistaceae) in amounts corresponding to an average o f 0.07% per dry weight. All cuticular waxes obtained from the various Cistus species consisted o f hydrocarbons, wax esters, triterpenol esters, aldehydes, primary alcohols and free fatty acids. These com pounds were present as homologues in changing patterns. In addition two unidentified acids and two unknown alcohols were found. Epicuticular waxes from seed coats differed qualitatively and quantitatively from those o f Cistus leaves and petals and confirmed the existence o f organ sp ecific com positions o f epicuticular waxes. The wax com ponents secreted in this com position result in a cover which in scanning electron microscopic pictures resembles a sm ooth layer o f solidified fluid lacking any crystalline structure. | | |
