 Title    Light and D ark Adaptation of Crayfish Visual Cells Depending on Extracellular Calcium Concentration  
 Abstract    Lowering of extracellular Ca2+-concentration from 14 x 10-3 M to ca. 10~ 6 M (using 1 mM ethyleneglycol bis (/?-aminoethylether) -N,N'-tetraacetic acid (E G T A)) results in weaker light adap­ tation by a 2 s light exposure and faster dark adaptation (half time 45 + 1%) of crayfish visual cells.

 Title    The Effect of Tetrodotoxin, Veratridine and Tetraethylammonium Chloride on the Receptor Potential o f the Crayfish Photoreceptor Cell  
 Abstract    S t i e v e a n d T . Ma l i n o w s k a In stitu t für Neurobiologie der K em forschungsanlage Jülich GmbH. The effect of three drugs on the receptor potential (ReP) o f the crayfish retina measured with external electrodes was tested. 1. Tetrodotoxin (TTX) (1 • 1CT6 g/ml and 1 • 10-5 g/ml) showed only slight effects on the receptor potential (Table I and II). 2. Veratridine (VERA) (1 • 10-5 g/ml) showed only small effects o f the same type as TT X but a little stronger on the receptor potential which became obvious especially in the period after washing out the drug (Table III). 3. Tetraethylammonium (TEA) (5 mWl) caused a decrease o f the height o f the receptor potential w ithout influencing the repolarizing phase (decrease-time tz) markedly (Table IV). The results can be interpreted as follows: 1. The permeability increase for sodium, calcium and magnesium, which causes the rising phase

 Title    Discovery of Cilia in the Mid-Gut of Arthopoda  
 Abstract    Cells bearing two cilia are found in the mid-gut of the Phyllopod Leptestheria dahalacensis. These cells seem to be sensory cells. They may be in contact with the muscle cells of the mid-gut.

 Title    Fate of Circulating Serotonin in the Hemolymph of the Crayfish, Orconectes limosus  
 Abstract    The fate of injected [14C]serotonin (0.1 nCi/1.6nmol per animal) was investigated in the crayfish Orconectes limosus after injection. Specific radioactivities reached highest values in the green gland, followed by intestine, gills, nervous tissue and digestive gland. Label accumu­ lation was lowest in the tail muscle. Cold serotonin injected into the hemolymph (50 nmol/100 g wet wt) was cleared with a mean half life of 12.9 +/— 2.6 min (15 °C; N = 5). By HPLC separation of hemolymph samples taken at intervals after the injection of [l4C]serotonin, the formation of a metabolic product could be demonstrated. The formation of the metabolite was not, however, detectable by na­ tive fluorescence, suggesting the metabolic breakdown of the indole ring. The combined amounts of acid soluble radioactivity recovered from hemolymph, green gland, digestive gland and intestine yielded 80-100%, 50-70% and 30-50% of the injected dose after 7 min, 1 h, and 4 h, respectively. Since other tissues did not account for the balance and less than 5% of the injected label had been excreted into the medium after 4 h the results suggest the gradual incorporation of the metabolites into the tissues.

 Title    The pH Dependence of the Receptor Potential of the Hermit Crab Photoreceptor  
 Abstract    The pH dependence of the receptor potential (ReP) of isolated layers of photoreceptor cells from the hermit crab compound eye (Eupagurus bernhardus L.) was determined. Measurements were performed, using extracellular electrodes, in the range pH 3.5 — 9.5 in three different buffer systems: Tris, glycine, and phosphate. The amplitude of the ReP was highest at pH 7.5 and decreased in more acidic and more alka­ line salines (Fig. 4). Relative to the changes in ReP amplitude, the changes in time course and shape of ReP were small. Salines of pH other than 7.5 caused an increase of the latent period but decreased the peak amplitude time and the repolarizing phase (i2). Alkaline salines caused about the same changes in the ReP as acidic salines. The only observed difference was that repolarisation was more strongly influenced by alkaline solutions and that the plateau magnitude was depressed relatively more than the peak magnitude in acidic environments. Of the three buffers used, Tris had the weakest influence on the ReP and phosphate buffer the strongest. In contrast to the good reproducibility of the experimental results, the reversibility of the pH effects was generally poor; the effects with glycine-buffer were more reversible than those with Tris.
