 Title    Struktur und mechanische Eigenschaften dermatosparaktischen Kollagens Structure and Mechanical Properties of Dermatosparactic Collagen  
 Abstract    Dermatosparactic calf-tail-tendon-collagen was investigated by mechanical measurements, elec­ tron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. We suppose, that the tensile strength decrease of the fibres is due to the irregular aggregation of subfibrils to fibrils. The x-ray diagram of the fibre is not influenced by state of disorder. Cyclic extension of dermatosparactic collagen leads to a higher increase in tensile strength than in the case of normal calf tendon. The effect might be due to the increase of fibril-and area-density resulting in an augmentation of crosslinks.

 Title    Stained Native Collagen: Interpretation of the Small Angle X-ray Scattering and Electron Microscopic Pictures in Terms of the Primary Structure  
 Abstract    The average axial electron-density distribution of stained collagen fibers derived from X-ray sm all angle pattern, is shown to be substantially related to the projection of the polar amino acid residues onto the axis of the m icrofibril taking into consideration the staggering of neighbouring molecules. In order to arrive ultim ately at a quantitative representation of the experim ental data, an additional periodic fluctuation of the density in necessity of this regular m icrophase structure for an of collagen fibers will be indicated .

 Title    Twisted Fibrils are a Structural Principle in the Assembly of Interstitial Collagens, Chordae Tendineae Included  
 Abstract    X-ray diffraction analysis of connective tissue samples, which contain type I and type III collagen shows that twisted collagen fibrils are a general principle of assembly. The occurrence of twisted fibrils in native wet Chordae tendineae, skin and Aorta is combined with a shorter axial periodicity of about 65 nm. This shorter D period is shown to be directly related to the tilt of the molecules, which have to be curved to build-up twisted fibrils.

 Title    Hydratwasseraustausch und Alkanol-induzierte Molekulare Umordnungen an Kollagen * Exchange o f the Structural W ater o f C ollagen and Alcanol-Induced M olecu lar Rearrangement  
 Abstract    The exchange of the structural water o f collagen for alcanols was investigated using X -ray diffraction combined with m echanical measurements. The stepwise dehydration with methanol, ethanol or 1-propanol is reflected by the reversible loss o f the characteristic equatorial reflexions o f native rat tail tendons. The exchange for 1-alcanols in ascending homologous order is ch aracterized by: 1. an increase in the distance between the axes o f the triple helices depending on the num ber of carbon atoms o f the alkyl chain, 2. a shortening of the long-spacing of 67 nm characteristic o f native collagen and 3. the herewith correlated increase in tension on isometrically measured fibres. The stepwise dehydration with 2-propanol leads first to a loss o f the equatorial reflexions that are characteristic of native collagen, then to their reappearance at sm aller diffraction angles. The exchange for 2-alcanols in ascending homologous order is characterized by: 1. a splitted equatorial reflexion at 4.1 ± 0 .1 nm, that stays constant up to 2-nonanol, and moves to 4 . 8 -5 .0 ± 0 .1 nm with more than 9 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, 2. a shortening o f the long spacing o f 67 nm characteristic of native collagen and 3. the herewith correlated increase in tension on isometrically measured fibres. Stereochemical requirements are discussed as well as consequences for the structural model o f collagen.
