 Title    The Endoplasmic Reticulum Chaperone G RP94 Is Induced in the Thyrocytes by Cadmium  
 Abstract    We established a relationship between the toxic effects of cadmium on the expression of the endoplasmic reticulum (E R) chaperone GRP94 (glucose regulated protein 94) and cell survival in cultured rat-thyrocytes of FRTL5 cells. There are no data reporting that the en­ hanced expression of G RP94 by Cd stimulation is detectable in thyrocytes. Western blot analysis revealed higher levels of GRP94 expression in those cells post-treated with low concentrations of Cd, following a step-down treatment method, than in Cd pre-treated cells or cells not treated with any Cd, due to changes in cellular sensitivity after pre-treatment with Cd and the possible induction of G RP94 expression after removal of a low concentration of Cd. Elevated G R P94 expression in thyrocytes post-treated with Cd confers a survival advantage by rendering them resistant to cytotoxic stress, and the existence in the thyrocytes of a Cd-specific pathway regulates the expression of stress proteins by Cd.

 Title    Cadmium against Higher Plant Photosynthesis -a Variety of Effects and Where Do They Possibly Come From?

E-mail: zkrupa@biotop.umcs.lublin.pl The complexity of in vivo toxic effects of Cd on higher plants makes almost impossible an accurate distinction between direct and indirect mechanisms of its action on the photosyn­ thetic apparatus. We, therefore, postulate that multiple Cd effects on plant physiological and metabolic processes may finally be focused on photosynthesis. This would also explain the phenomenon that only a small fraction of Cd entering chloroplasts may cause such disastrous changes in their structure and function. In return, the inhibition of photosynthesis affects numerous metabolic pathways dependent on the primary carbon metabolism.

 Title    Carbene Adducts of Dimethylcadmium  
 Abstract    The first examples of carbene-cadmium complexes are reported from the reactions of a variety of imidazol-2-ylidenes or imidazolin-2-ylidenes with dimethylcadmium. Four new carbene complexes are characterized by NMR spectroscopy ('H , i?C and 1 n Cd). The cadmium centers are strongly shifted downfield (100 -1 5 0 ppm) by interaction with the carbenes. X-ray structures are reported for three carbene-cadmium 1:1 adducts. The cadmium centers exhibit distorted trigonal-planar geometries in which the carbene ligands have an average 18.2 pm longer bond distance to cadmium compared to the methyl groups. The planes of cadmium coordination are twisted with respect to the plane of the imidazole ring. The more basic imidazolin-2-ylidene is shown to displace imidazol-2-ylidenes from the cadmium center.

 Title    Effects of Heavy Metals on the Fast Chlorophyll Fluorescence Induction Kinetics of Photosystem II: a Comparative Study  
 Abstract    The effects of toxic concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd on the fast induction kinetics of fluorescence from photosystem(PS)II were investigated in a comparative way. The fast fluo­ rescence transient from primary leaves of m etal-treated bean plants was studied. During several days after metal application, the time course of the changes induced by the different metals was monitored. The results evidenced not only a different time course of the changes in fluorescence related parameters for the three metals, but also different effects on the fluorescence induction kinetics, which could possibly be linked to different mechanisms of action of the metals.

 Title    Relationship between Changes in Ion Content of Leaves and Chlorophyll-Protein Composition in Cucumber under Cd and Pb Stress  
 Abstract    Hydroponically cultured cucumber plants supplied with 4 |.im Fe chelated either with E D T A or citrate and treated with Cd (10 jim) and Pb (10, 50 jam) from their one-or four-leaf stage were grown up to five-week-old age. The decrease in the chlorophyll content was the most pronounced in plants treated with Cd from a younger age, and in the case of Fe-citrate. The chlorophyll a/b ratio of Cd stressed plants was also significantly lowered. In later treated plants the accumulation of chlorophyll was inhibited and the chlorophyll a/b ratio decreased only in the vigorously growing young leaves. Pb treatm ent had only a slight effect on both parameters. The changes in the chlorophyll-protein pattern of thylakoids were strongly related to their chlorophyll content but the response of each complex was different. Cd reduced the amount of chlorophyll containing complexes in the order of photosystem I > light-harvesting complex II > photosystem Il-core, while light-harvesting complex II ap­ peared somewhat more sensitive than photosystem I in Pb treated plants. In accordance, a decline or blue shift of the long wavelength fluorescence emission band of chloroplasts was observed referring to disturbances also in photosystem I antenna assembly. The accumulation of chlorophyll and chlorophyll-proteins did not show close relationship to the heavy metal content of leaves which was the highest in the first of the intensively expanding leaves in the time of the treatm ent. The extraordinary sensitivity of photosystem I, and the relative sta­ bility of photosystem II under Cd treatm ent were similar to the case found in iron deficient plants. However, the pattern of chlorophyll content of leaf storeys of Cd treated plants rather followed the changes in their Mn content.

 Title    Responses of the Lichen Cladonia convoluta to High C 0 2 Level and Heavy Metal Treatment  
 Abstract    Despite of the downward acclimation of photosynthesis in C. convoluta, increased net photosynthesis and carbon balance can be anticipated in response to elevated atmospheric C 0 2 level. C 0 2 exchange measurement seems to be m ore indicative when detecting heavy metal stress than fluorescence parameters. Among these, the relative fluorescence decrease ratio (R F d 690) shows damage first, suggesting that the primary attack site for heavy metal ions is C 0 2 fixation and reaction centres are harmed last. Long-term elevated C 0 2 amelio­ rates partly this damage by improving C-balance to a greater extent in the heavy-metal stressed lichens.

 Title    The Effect of Cd on Chlorophyll and Light-Harvesting Complex II Biosynthesis in Greening Plants  
 Abstract    The effect of Cd on chlorophyll (Chi) as well as on light-harvesting complex II (L H C II) accumulation, has been examined during the early stages of development in etiolated Phaseo-lus vulgaris leaves exposed to intermittent light-dark cycles. We found that at the Cd concen­ trations studied, both Chi and LH C II accumulation were drastically reduced, although the LDS-solubilized total leaf protein level remained unaffected. However, on the basis of total chlorophyll present, the amount of stabilized LH CII was similar in both Cd-treated and non­ treated samples. Additionally, the thylakoid-bound protease known to degrade L H C II, was found to be inhibited by Cd treatm ent both in vivo and in vitro. Finally, Northern hybridiza­ tion analysis indicated that Cd affects LH CII accumulation by reducing drastically the steady-state level of L hcb transcripts.
