 Title    A Novel Caffeic Acid Derivative and Other Constituents of Populus Bud Excretion and Propolis (Bee-Glue)  
 Abstract    E ck h a rd W ollenw eber, Y oshinori A sakaw a*, D etlef Schillo, U lrich L eh m an n , and H eid ru n W eigel The bud exudates of Populus nigra, P. trichocarpa, and P. grandidentata x tremuloides were analyzed for the presence of phenolics and flavonoids. A novel natural product, caffeic acid y.y-dimethylallyl ester, was identified from P. nigra, along with further phenolics such as /?-hydroxy-acetophenone, dimethyl caffeic acid, cinnamoyl cinnamata and vanillin. The flavonoid aglycones correspond to those reported earlier. Propolis samples from the Sonoran Desert were shown to exhibit the flavonoid pattern that is typical for poplar bud exudates, thus confirming this material as the major source for bee-glue. Only a single flavonoid might originate from the leaf exudate of a desert shrub.

 Title    Populus cathayana and Populus szechuanica  
 Abstract    Analysis o f GC-M S data revealed 58 com ponents o f bud exudate from P. cathayana (Section Tacamahaca) and 40 com ponents o f bud exudate from P. szechuanica (Section Tacamahaca) o f which 47 and 35 respectively were phenolics. The bud exudates were very similar in com position, containing flavanones and chalcones (61 % and 51% respectively), flavones (15% and 12%) and pentenyl caffeates (11 % and 6%). The major single com ­ ponent o f the exudate o f both poplars was pinobanksin-3-acetate (26% and 33%). The bud exudates o f P. ca­ thayana and P. szechuanica are similar to those o f Euro­ pean and American Section Aigeiros poplars and unlike those o f North American Section Tacamahaca poplars.

 Title      
 Abstract    Analysis by GC-MS identified 30 phenolic compo­ nents of the bud exudate of P. laurifolia. The majority of the exudate was composed of flavanones, flavanonols and chalcones, with pinobanksin-3-acetate being the major component. The bud exudate resembled that of the Asian Section Tacamahaca poplars P. cathayana and P. szechuanica but was unlike that of the North Ameri­ can Section Tacamahaca poplars, P. balsamifera and P. trichocarpa.

 Title    Com position o f Propolis from Two Different Spanish Regions  
 Abstract    Propolis and propolis balsam from two different Spanish Regions were analyzed by GC-MS. The majori­ ty of the compounds were typical of poplar bud exudate of P. nigra. N o significant differences were found be­ tween the balsam and the entire propolis analyzed, apart from the components of beeswax added to the plant exu­ date by the bees.
