 Title    c , T-Dependence of the Self Diffusion in Concentrated Aqueous Sucrose Solutions  
 Abstract    The self diffusion coefficients D of the water molecules and of sucrose have been deter­ mined by the pulsed field gradient NMR technique over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations (cmax: 70% w/w sue.). All temperature dependencies can be fitted to a Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation. The isothermic concentration dependence of D for the sucrose is given by a simple exponential concentration dependence.

 Title    Gamma-Radiolysis of Aqueous Solution of Proline  
 Abstract    Gamma-radiolysis of 0.05 M aqueous neutral proline solution was investigated. As the main reaction of proline radiolysis in oxygenated solutions, the hydroxylation reactions leading to hydroxyproline formation and the reactions leading to the total destruction of the pyrrolidine ring were shown. In oxygen-free solutions the yield of these reactions decreased; in this medium combination reactions giving rise to higher molecular weight combination products (up to approx. 1500) belong to the most important ones. In addition to radiation-decarboxylation reactions the products of radiation-carboxylation reactions were also detected in the irradiated solution of proline free of oxygen.

 Abstract    S p e c tro s c o p ic S tu d y o f th e Io n A s s o c ia tio n o f L ith iu m S u lf a te A q u e o u s S o lu tio n s Dedicated to Prof. Hitoshi Ohtaki on the occasion of his 60th birthday A Raman spectroscopic study of Li2S04 aqueous solutions as function of concentration and temperature was performed. The dynamic properties of the sulfate ions were studied by a band profile analysis of their internal modes using Fourier transform methods. This analysis reveals the perturbation of the S04" vibrations due to ionic interactions. From the vt (SO;2) band profile the spectroscopic ionic association constant was calculated in the range from 5 to 80 °C. The large difference found between the values thus obtained for the association constant and the values obtained from macroscopic measurements is interpreted, assuming that Raman spectra reflect only the short-range forces acting on the ions. Using the Bjerrum equation to calculate the contribution for the long-range forces, good agreement is found between the spectroscopic and macroscopic results.

 Title    Reaction of Dihydroxymethyl Radical with Molecular Oxygen in Aqueous Solution  
 Abstract    Dihydroxymethyl radical (1) was found to react with oxygen diffusion controlled (k = 4.5 x 10 9 M _1 s -1). The final products of the reaction are formic acid and 1/2 hydrogen peroxide. The precursor of H2O2 was shown to be O2' -which is formed with G(02" -) = 6.3 (a value which includes the 02"~ formed by H atoms and oxygen (G(H) = 0.55)). If it is assumed that dihydroxymethylperoxyl radicals are formed as intermediates the rate constant of 02'~ formation must be > 10 6 s -1 . A bimolecular reaction of two dihydroxy-methylperoxyl radicals forming tetroxides does not occur at the dose rates used. The rate constants for the establishment of the equilibrium CH2(0H)2 + H2O2 CHaOH(OOH) + HaO k-3 have been determined at pH 5.7 and 19 °C to be k3=1.9x 10~ 2 M^s -1 and k_3 = 1.5 X 10~ 6 M _1 s _1 in aqueous solution.

 Title    Radiation Aggregates of Insulin  
 Abstract    During the irradiation of aqueous solution of insulin (pH 1.8) the decrease o f original insulin molecules and the formation of radiation aggregates o f insulin was studied in dependence on the concentration of irradiation solution, on the doses and conditions o f irradiation (oxygenated and oxygen-free atmosphere, the presence of ?-butanol, addition o f [14C] amino acids). From the results obtained and results published earlier it may be assumed that in irradiated solution on insulin new covalent bonds between insulin molecules are formed at tyrosyl, phenylalanyl and cystyl radi­ cals; these radicals are formed by the action of both direct and indirect effect (at present pH 1.8 mainly of H atoms).

 Title    Structural Study of Poly-Molybdate Ions in Acid Mo-Ni Aqueous Solutions  
 Abstract    The atomic structure of poly-molybdate ions formed in acid Ni-Mo aqueous solutions has been determined by applying anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) and EXAFS methods. In a solution containing only molybdenum ions, we found only a poly-molybdate ion consisting of seven edge-sharing Mo0 6 octahedra. In a solution containing both Mo and Ni ions, there exists another poly-molybdate ion consisting of 6 edge-sharing MoO & surrounding an Ni ion. The total coordination number of Mo and Ni ions around a molybdenum ion is reduced by half when introducing citric ions into the Ni and Mo solution. This indicates that the large poly-molybdate ion is decomposed to smaller molybdate ions when forming citric complexes. Since molybdenum-nickel alloys can not be electrodeposited from solutions without citric ions, we propose a view that the structural change of the poly-molybdate ions in the solutions is closely related with the mechanism of induced codeposition of molybdenum and nickel alloy. The results of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements also support this conclusion.

 Title    Gamma-Radiolysis of Aqueous Solution of Histidine  
 Abstract    The dependence of Gi(— M) values of histidine on the concentration of irradiated 10-4 —10-1 m solutions, pH and the presence of 0 2 , N20 and sec-butyl alcohol was investigated. In oxygen-free medium the maximum radiation sensitivity of histidine was found at pH 5 — 8 ; in oxygenated solutions it was shifted to the 6 — 11 pH range. The formation of radiation products was also studied. The course of radiation decomposition of histidine depends on the presence of oxygen and on the pH of irradiated solution.
