 Title    The Oxidation of Trimethylamine by OH Radicals in Aqueous Solution, as Studied by Pulse Radiolysis, ESR, and Product Analysis. The Reactions of the Alkylamine Radical Cation, the Aminoalkyl Radical, and the Protonated Aminoalkyl Radical
 Abstract    Radiation Chemistry, A mines, Electron T ransfer. Hydrogen A bstraction, Reaction Kinetics Hydroxyl radical reactions with trim ethylam ine in aqueous solution lead to the form ation of the aminoalkyl radical (C H ,)2N CH ; (A) and its conjugated acid (C H 3):H N C H 2 (A H t) as well as to the alkylamine radical cation (CH 3)3N t (N t). These radicals are transform ed into each other by hydrolytic reactions, e.g. — H + H + (C H ,),H N C H ; c — -> (c h i n c h ; < --> (c h ,)3n + (A H t) h " (Ä) —H + (N +) pK, = 3.6 pK, = 8.0 Radicals A H t are more acidic (pK., ~ 3.6) than the radicals N t (pK , ~ 8.0). C onsequently, N T predom inate over A H t under quasi equilibrium conditions (e.g. in the presence of phosphate buffer) and are the only species observed by ESR in acid solutions. Reacting with the protonated amine. OH radicals abstract hydrogen at nitrogen and at carbon with com parable ease. Reaction of OH radicals with the free amine may initially also generate N t, beside H -abstraction at carbon. Radicals A ' absorb more strongly at 260 nm (f = 3390 d m 'mol 'em ') than the radical cation N T (f = 950 dm 'm o r 'em '). Radical A ' has reducing properties w hereas radicals A H t and N t have oxidizing properties and hence can be m onitored with p-nitroacetophenone (the reducing radi cals), and Fe(CN)64" , N ,N '-tetram ethyl-/?-phenylenediam ine and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethyl-benz-thiazoline-6-sulphonate) (the oxidizing radicals). These radicals mainly (> 8 5 %) disproportion ate. one of the products being formaldehyde.

 Title    14N and 15N-NMR Spectroscopy of Diazaphospholes and the Linear Correlation of the Chemical Shift of Two-Coordinate N and P
 Abstract    A systematic natural abundance 15N NM R study o f diazaphospholes is presented for the first tim e, giving accurate values for chemical shifts, 6 N , and coupling constants / (31P 15N), /(^ N 'H). 14N N M R spectra can be used to predict the magnitude o f '/ (31P 14N) if the broadening o f the 31P resonance by scalar relaxation is known. The relaxation behaviour o f the 14N nuclei corresponds to that found in azoles indicating a comparable electronic ground state structure. The com parison o f the chem ical shifts, <5N, in the diazaphospholes with (5N o f corresponding triazoles reveals differences which can be traced to the N —P cr-bonds and to the influence o f the phosphorus atom on the jr-system. A linear correlation (5N/<5P exists coordinate nitrogen and phosphorus, respectively.

 Abstract    By reaction o f trithiazylchloride, (NSC1)3, with PPh4[RuCl4(N O)]2 in dichlorom ethane the thiazylchloridenitrosyl com plex PPh4[RuCl4(N O)(N SC l)] is obtained; its vacuum pyrolysis at 2 0 0 -2 2 0 °C yields the thionitrosyl com plex (PPh4)2[RuCl4(N S)]2 which crystallizes from C H 2C12 solution with four m olecules o f CH 2C12. Both com pounds were charaterized by their IR spectra and by X-ray crystal structure determ inations. Crystal data: PPh4[RuCl4(N O)(N S C l)], m on o clinic, space group P 2 xln, Z = 4, a = 982.6, b = 1700.0, c = 1772.3 pm , ß = 104.79° (2548 observed reflexions, R = 0.046); (PPh4)2[RuCl4(N S)]2-4 C H 2C12, triclinic, P I , Z = 1, a = 952.9, b = 1380.0, c — 1458.5 pm , a — 112.91, ß = 106.67, y = 92.61° (3760 observed reflexions, R = 0.053). In the [RuCl4(N O)(N S C l)]e ion the nitrosyl and thiazyl chloride ligands occupy e x  positions; bond lengths indicate double bonds in the linear Ru = N -0 group, while the NSC1 m olecule is attached by a donor-acceptor interaction R u -N = S -C l , although with a rather short Ru —N bond o f 198 pm (N = S 144 pm, S —Cl 213 pm).  Abstract    The cuticular hydrocarbons o f the C olorado beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata say consist of 2-m ethylalkanes, internally branched m onom ethylalkanes, dim ethyl-, trimethyl-and tetramethyl-alkanes. The hydrocarbons differ from those o f m ost o f the other insects so far investigated. The major com ponents were found to be the dim ethyl branched alkanes, 2,6-and/or 7,22-dimethyl-octacosane and the tetram ethylalkane, 3,10,16,23-tetram ethyltritriacontane. The hydrocarbons identified are m embers o f hom ologous series which differ by two m ethylene groups. The identifi cation of hydrocarbons was achieved by mass spectrom etry and gas chromatographic determ ina tion o f Kovats retention indices on two high efficiency capillary colum ns coated with D exsil 300 and O V-1.

 Title    Zur Reaktivität von Natrium-bis-trimethylsilylamid gegenüber Metallcarbonylkomplexen mit Metall-Metall-Bindungen, I ER2-verbrückte Dicyano-und Diisonitril-octacarbonyl-dimanganate (E = Sn, Pb) The Reactivity of Sodium Bis-trimethylsilylamide against Metal Carbonyl Complexes with M etal Metal Bonds, I E R 2 Bridged Dicyano or Diisonitrile Octacarbonyl D im anganates (E = Sn, Pb)
 Abstract    EPh2 bridged dicyano octacarbonyl dim etalates {P h2E [M n(C O)4C N ]2} 2~ are formed by the reaction of bis(carbonyl-m etalates) o f tin and lead Ph2E [M n(C O)5]2 with N aN (SiM e3)2. The new dicyano anions can be transformed with trialkyloxonium tetrafluoroborates [R '30 ] B F 4 or chlor-trimethylsilane and -germane into the corresponding diisonitrile com plexes Ph2E [M n(C O)4C N R ']2 (R' = M e, Et, SiM e3, G eM e3). In the case o f Ph2E [M n(C O)4C N R ']2 (R ' = M e, Et; E = Sn. Pb) the two phenyl groups can be rem oved with dry hydrogenchloride to give Cl2E [M n(C O)4C N R ']2. NM R and mass spectra are discussed. The vibrational spectra of the new com pounds show cis-coordination of the Sn atoms and the cyano or isonitrile ligands in the carbonylmetalate frag ments. This is confirmed by the X-ray structure analysis o f P taSn[M n(C O)4CNMe]-, (space group P 2 Jn).
