 Title      
 Abstract    The geometry and electronic structure of 1.3.5-triphenylbenzene (TPB) has been determined by semiempirical quantum methods. Using the MNDO approach, the salient dependencies of the first ionization potential, the intramolecular distances and the bond angles on the dihedral angle between the planes of the TPB benzene rings were established. By an application of the CNDO/S method the UV spectrum of TPB was calculated. A comparison of the calculated transition ener­ gies with the values observed in the absorption spectrum yields 45° for the dihedral angle, which is in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data.

 Title      
 Abstract    The 5] energy levels of isotopically mixed benzene dimers are studied in a supersonic ex­ pansion. In the benzene dimer the O— O transition which is forbidden in the bare molecule is weakly allowed. The spectra show a small splitting for the homodimer and a single transition for the heterodimer, and an additional red shift of the homo dimer transition.

 Abstract    o m e C o n s id e ra tio n s A b o u t B o n d In d ic e s in N o n -o r th o g o n a l B a s e s a n d th e M O C a lc u la tio n o f V a le n c e a n d O x id a tio n N u m b e r In order to guarantee the desired invariance properties of bond indices, we show the importance of expliciting the tensor character of the matrices concerned, so as to deal with a contraction in the tensor sense between a covariant index and a contravariant one. A straight­ forward definition of oxidation numbers is proposed. IEH calculations of valence and oxidation numbers for some appropriate examples are performed: they emphasize the role of "secondary" bonds in N and C-containing compounds; the hydrogen behaviour in half-bonds and strong H-bonds is satisfactorily accounted for; valence and oxidation number values are assigned to Fe, Co and Ni in a few complexes.

Spectroscopic Investigation of the D onor Behaviour of the 2,6-and 23-D im ethylnaphthalene The charge transfer complexes of 2,3-(I) and 2,6-Dimethylnaphthalenes (II) as electron donors with tri-and di-nitrobenzenes as electron acceptors are prepared and investigated by element analysis, IR. 'H nmr and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that I yields CT complexes of 1:1 type only while II is capable of forming 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 (donor: acceptor) compounds. The spectral characteristics of the CT complexes are pointed out and discussed. The difference in the donor behaviour between I and II is explained in the light of PPP-MO cal­ culations.

 Title     
 Abstract    e te rm in a tio n o f U ltr a s o n ic A b s o r p tio n a n d V e lo c ity a n d th e D eriv ed T h e r m o d y n a m ic P r o p e r t ie s o f P u re a n d B in a ry M o lte n S a l ts The absorption and velocity of ultrasonic waves in molten salts are studied with an improved pulse method, which allows an exact and immediate measurement of the runtime of the impulses and of the amplitude of the recorded signals. The measurements are performed in the pure molten salts sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and silver nitrate as well as in the three binary mixtures of these salts in the temperature range between 430 K and 620 K at various compositions. All values are measured at 27.789 MHz, the resonance frequency of the quartz transducers being used. From the ultrasonic velocity, together with the expansion coefficient and the specific heat capacity, the adiabatic compressibility, the adiabactic constant, and the Rao's constant have been calculated. From the ultrasonic absorption and velocity results the volume viscosity, which can be referred to the structural relaxation of the molecules in the fused salts investigated here.

 Title    Comment to the Reply by Schumacher and Boswell About Their Proposed Magnetospheric Electron Ring Experiment  
 Abstract    The authors quote several experimental papers on electron beam injection by rocket-borne electron guns into the magnetosphere, and where the space­ craft could be neutralized. In one experiment for example, a large mylar disc was used to collect elec­ trons from the magnetospheric plasma. It is quite ob­ vious, however, that if a large mylar disc can collect electrons for the neutralization of the spacecraft, the much larger surface of the electron ring can do the same even better. If plasma electrons flow to the mylar disc, an equal amount of plasma ions flow to the electron ring, with the plasma electrons neutral­ izing the rocket gun and the ions neutralizing the electron ring. For the collective electron ring accel­ erator concept however, a charged electron ring is required, and which must have a deep electrostatic potential well. Therefore, the concept proposed by the authors is clearly unfeasible in a plasma en­ vironment which can neutralize the gun. According­ ly, all the experiments quoted by Schumacher and Boswell dealt with neutralized or almost neutralized beams. In one experiment for example, it was reported that the gun had a residual potential of

 Abstract    The following salts of the l,2-hydrazine-bis(dithiocarboxylic acid) have been prepared: Mi[S->CNH —NHCS^], M = N a, K and M3[S->CN-NHCS2], M — Na, K. In the solvated crystals K2 1S2C N H -N H C S 2 '] • 4 C H 3O H (a = 718.0(5), b = 1329.3(8), c = 937.7(9) pm , ß = 109.26(6)°, space group C2/m , Z = 2) the [S2C N H -N H C S 2]2" ion possesses crystallographic C2h sym metry, i.e. a trans planar structure with a N -N bond length of 139.2(3) pm. V ibrational spectra indicate a lower sym metrical anion in the unsolvated crystals. In the trianion [S2CN —N HCS2]3_ the C —N stretching vibrations are observed at 1400 and 1310 cm" 1.

 Abstract    The hybrid phases N b590 147F and N b650 16iF3 were prepared at high tem perature and investi­ gated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Both phases have block structures. The sample of the phase N b590 147F is very well ordered, w hereas the phase N b650 161F3 shows some defects. In a sample of Nb650 161F3 m icrodom ains of a new 2:1 hybrid phase Nb960 238F4 were found. Structural differences of the systems N b20 5/N b 0 2F and N b20 5/W 0 3 are discussed.

 Abstract    Die Molekül-und Kristallstruktur von Tri-terf-butylcyclotriphosphan-pentacarbonyl-chrom(O), [(f-BuP)3Cr(CO)5] Structural Chemistry of Phosphorus-Containing Chains and Rings, IX [1] The M olecular and Crystal Structure of Tri-/m -butylcydotriphosphane-pentacarbonyl-chrom ium (0), [(r-BuP)3C r(C O)5] The structure of [(f-BuP)3C r(C O)5], C 17CrH2705P3, has been determ ined by single crystal X-ray techniques, solved by 'direct m ethods', and refined to R = 0.048, wR = 0.050 for 3657 reflections by blocked least squares. The com pound crystallizes in the space group P 2x/c with a = 1664.9 pm , b — 916.5 pm , c = 3089.8 pm, ß = 91.45° and Z = 8 formula units. The structure consists of two crystallographically independent but structurally nearly identical m ononuclear [(r-BuP)3C r(C O)5] complexes with the three-m em -bered ring (/-BuP)3 as an unidentate a-donor ligand. Com pared to the free molecule (r-BuP)3 the cyclophosphane ligand is slightly distorted on account of its coordination to the C r(C O)5-group.
