Title    Electromagnetic Modulation of Biological Processes: Bicarbonate Effect and M echanistic Considerations in the Ca-Uptake by Embryonal Chick Tibia in vitro
Abstract    Electromagnetically induced currents pulsating at very low frequency stim ulated calcium uptake by chick embryo tibia rudiments only when bicarbonate was present in the culture medium. A bicarbonate-dependent Ca2+-ATPase m ight be im plicated in coupling o f the electromagnetic signal with processes that promote Ca-transport and storage in bone tissue.

Title    Electromagnetic M odulation of Biological Processes: ATPase Function and D NA Production by Raji Cancer Cells in vitro
Abstract    Addition o f either ATP or ouabain to the culture m edium markedly depressed thym idine incorporation into D N A in Raji cells. The electrom agnetic field, pulsating at very low frequency, did not affect D N A synthesis in normal culture m edia nor did it alter its ouabain-inhibition, but it partially reversed the ATP-inhibition. In spite o f the presence o f ATP, ouabain prevented stimulation o f ATPase and D N A synthesis by the field. Although no m echanism is known for the action o f either ATP or the field, the results may be interpreted in light o f existing speculations. In the absence o f the field, external ATP may go into an ATP pool that either blocks ATPase or feeds adenyl cyclase, which hinders D N A synthesis. In contrast, the electrom agnetic field may either turn o ff adenyl cyclase or sim ply stim ulate the

Title    The Influence o f the Extracellular Concentration of Calcium, Magnesium and Sodium on the Repolarizing Phase of the Receptor Potential of the Limulus Ventral Nerve Photoreceptor
Abstract    Limulus Ventral N erve Photoreceptor, M embrane Potential, T im e Course o f Receptor Potential, Calcium and/or Sodium D eficiency, M agnesium as Substitute for Calcium 1. Lowering the extracellular calcium concentration from 10 mmol/1 to 1 nmol/1 causes, besides reducing membrane potential (PMP) and peak am plitude (/zmax) o f the light response o f the Limulus ventral nerve photoreceptor (see Stieve and Bruns [1]), a prolongation o f the tim e course o f the light response. The retarded tim e course (characterized by latent-period flat, tim e-to-peak fmax, decrease tim e t2 and decline quotient 0 hn) caused by low calcium concentration is not antagonized by either reducing the sodium concentration (from 0.5 to 0.05 mol/1) or increasing the m agnesium concentration (from 5 x 10-5 to 5 x 10-2 mol/1) in contrast to the effects on the PMP and Amax. 2. This effect o f lowering the calcium concentration on the tim e course o f the ReP is distinctly different from that on m embrane potential and transient o f the ReP described before. It is not characterized by a calcium /sodium binding com petition but is probably m ore closely related to the bump-generating mechanism. It can be explained on the assum ption that the tim e parameters o f the ReP are primarily determined by the latency distribution o f the underlying bumps which is expanded under low calcium conditions.

Title    Adsorbenskultur — ein W eg zur Steigerung der Sekundärstoffproduktion in pflanzlichen Suspensionskulturen Adsorbent Culture -M ethod for the Enhanced Production of Secondary Substances in Plant Suspension Cultures
Abstract    A crown-gall suspension o f M atricaria cham omilla L. was cultivated in the presence o f an adsorbent (activated charcoal, AC). The culture produces besides other secondary products coniferyl aldehyde which is excreted by the cells and distributed between cells, m edium , and the AC according to equilibrium distributions with more than 95% o f the substance adsorbed to the AC. This deprivation o f coniferyl aldehyde from the m edium enables the cells to increase the production o f this substance up to 60-fold. The system M atricaria/coniferyl aldehyde serves as a model for the improvement o f the production o f secondary products by means o f plant cell suspensions.
