 Title    Electron Donor-Acceptor Properties of 10(S)-Chlorophyll a
Abstract    Evidence for the self-aggregation o f 10(S)-chlorophyll a (= chlorophyll a') in nonpolar solvents has been obtained by means o f absorption spectroscopy in the visible and infrared regions. The visible absorption spectrum of chlorophyll a' exhibits a shoulder at 680 nm in aliphatic hydrocar bon solvents and the infrared spectrum measured in carbon tetrachloride contains an "aggrega tion peak" at 1650 cm "1. IR spectroscopy shows, in addition, that the C-10 epim ers o f chlorophyll a are both present as monom ers in tetrahydrofuran. H ow ever, in the presence of a small amount o f aliphatic alcohol or water, the IR spectrum in tetrahydrofuran at lowered tem peratures exhibits an intense, wide absorption band at ~ 1650 cm -1 which was interpreted as arising from the hydrogen bonding o f the hydroxyl group to the C-9 keto carbonyl o f the chlorophyll.

 Title    Catharanthus roseus+
Abstract    A new alkaloid has been isolated from the leaves o f Catharanthus roseus. Spectroscopic and degradative studies have established its structure to be 16-epi-19-S-vindolinine. In trod u ction While much work have been done on Catharan thus roseus (Apocynaceae) resulting in the isolation of about 100 alkaloids, there is persistent interest in the plant and new alkaloids continue to be reported. In continuation of our isolation and synthetic studies on the alkaloids of Catharanthus roseus [1 — 15], we have isolated a new alkaloid from the leaves of this plant by a combination of selective extraction, pre cipitation and crystallization and carried out spec troscopic and degradative studies on it to determ ine its structure.  Title    Darstellung und Kristallstruktur von Tl4TiS4, TI4SnS4 und Tl4TiSe4 Preparation and Crystal Structure of Tl4TiS4, Tl4SnS4, and Tl4TiSe4
 Abstract    The isostructural com pounds Tl4TiS4, Tl4SnS4 and Tl4TiSe4 crystallize in the m onoclinic system , space group P2[/c with a — 8.328, b = 8.191, c — 15.248 Ä , ß = 104.53°; a = 8.395, b — 8.280, c — 15.398 Ä , ß = 103.69°, and a = 8.517, b = 8.389, c = 15.672 Ä , ß = 103.50°, respectively. There are four formula units in the unit cell. The crystal structures were determ ined and refined from single crystal diffractom eter data. They are characterized by isolated tetrahedral thioanions which are connected with each other by T l+ ions. The mean bond lengths are T i—S = 2.26 Ä , S n —S = 2.40 Ä and Ti —Se = 2.38 Ä . The T1 atoms are surrounded by six and seven chalcogen atom s, respectively, in an irregular and polar arrangement, thus indicating stereochem ical activity o f the lone electron pair o f the T l+ ions. T l -S distances vary from 2.93 to 3.98 Ä , T l—Se distances from 3.03 to 3.96 Ä . The Tl atom s have nearest Tl neighbours at distances ranging from 3.46 to 3.65 Ä . The crystal structure can be described as built from pseudotetragonal slabs oriented parallel to (001) which contain the cations and the tetrahedral anions. It is shown that a similar description is valid also for the crystal structures o f Tl4G eS4 [1] and N a4SnS4 [2, 3].

The low first ionization potentials betw een 7.0 eV and 7.7 eV stim u lated attempts to oxidize using A1C13 in H 2CC12 or D 2CC12. The hyperfine structured E SR spectra observed can be unequivocally assigned to the ethylene radical cations R 2N — HC = CH — N R 2 © which are formed from the obviously non-persistent species R2N —C ^ C — N R 2 ® via a hydrogen transfer. During the oxidation o f the dialkylam ino-substituted allenes no paramagnetic interm edi ates could be d etected , presumably due to a rapid dimerisation o f the allene radical cation (R 2N)2C = C = C (N R 2)2'®.
