 Title    Die Anwendbarkeit verschiedener Näherungsmethoden zur Berechnung von Kraftkonstanten bei Säkulargleichungen der Ordnung n > 2  
 Abstract    The Applicability of Different Approximation Methods for the Calculation of Force Constants in Secular Equations of Order n^> 2 Force constants for molecules with secular equations of order n > 2 have been determ ined with the help of various approxim ation m ethods based on the General Valence Force Field. The appli­ cability of the approxim ations have been tested empirically. It cannot be predicted with certainty whether any approxim ation method yields reliable force constants. Some m ethods have been found to be inapplicable. The calculation of off-diagonal force constants with any approxim ation method is impossible. The principle of the quasi-determ ination of off-diagonal force constant m atrix ele­ ments from the form of the G m atrix on which most approxim ation m ethods are based, is criti­ cally discussed. It is shown that diagonal force constants calculated with approxim ation methods are more reliable if the coupling between the vibrations in the same species is low. The application of approxim ation m ethods for the determ ination of force constants without critical consideration is not m eaningful.

 Title    Observation of a 2 s Activity from Irradiation of Rhenium with Higher-Energy Deuterons  
 Abstract    Following the irradiation of rhenium with deuterons of 45 to 80MeV a 184 keV y-line was observed which decayed with a half-life of 2.0 ±0.2 s. A tentative assignment of this activity to 1830 s is derived on the basis of yield ratios.

 Title    Knudsen Corrections for Flow Birefringence in Gases  
 Abstract    Differential equations and boundary conditions for the flow velocity and the tensor polarization are solved for a cylindrical Couette-flow apparatus in a magnetic field. The ensuing Knudsen cor­ rections for flow birefringence in gases consist of two contributions: (i) the velocity gradient is reduced by slip of the gas at the walls, (ii) the tensor polarization itself is influenced by gas-wall collisions. As a result, flow birefringence decreases for low pressures. For the gases HD, N, and CO the relevant surface parameters are already known from Knudsen corrections for the Senft-leben-Beenakker effect of viscosity. Thus the explicit pressure dependence of flow birefringence can be predicted for these gases (for zero magnetic field) and for the apparatus used by Baas.

 Title    Electric Polarization Caused by a Diffusion Flow in a Polar Gas Mixture  
 Abstract    The kinetic theory of the diffusio-electric polarization is developed analogous to the previously treated thermo-electric polarization (Waldmann, Hess 1969). The relevant constitutive law is derived. The characteristic coefficient determining the magnitude of this effect is related to collision integrals obtained from the Waldmann-Snider equation. A simple model calculation shows that this coefficient will be nonzero, in general, and of measurable size, for polar symmetric top molecules.

 Title    On the Normalization of Meson Eigenstates in Functional Quantum Theory of the Nonlinear Spinor Field  
 Abstract    In the framework of the functional quantum theory of the nonlinear spinor field the normaliza­ tion of functional eigenstates of scalar mesons is performed. By calculating the lowest approxima­ tion of the functional eigenstates for scalar mesons from the dynamical functional equation of the theory, it follows that scalar mesons of positive as well as of negative parity are admitted. Re­ quiring a positive norm for physical particles the result of normalization shows that mesons with positive parity are excluded, while meson states with negative parity give a positive definite norm. This corresponds to experimental experience.

 Title    An Investigation of the Molecules 0 2, CHC13, c —C4F8, C7F14 and HBr by Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) Technique at Energies < 0.4 eV  
 Abstract    Preliminary experiments have shown that helium gas can be considered a good choice to be used in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) studies, at the same time as a carrier gas and as a source of production of free electrons. An account of destruction of He metastable atoms present in the flow-stream is given. Changes in the linewidth with or without the electron scavenger and thermalization of the electrons are discussed. The energy dependence for the electron attachment to the molecules 0 2, CHC13, c — C4F8, C7F14, and HBr is investigated. The energy scale for electron attachment processes in relation to the input microwave power is established for He carrier gas. Such processes can be studied by employing the ECR technique from thermal energies up to 0.4 eV.

 Title    Scattering of Ions V. Elastic Scattering of the Symmetric Rare Gas Ion — Rare Gas Atom Systems  
 Abstract    Differential cross-sections for the elastic scattering of Ne+ on Ne, Ar+ on Ar, Kr+ on Kr, and Xe+ on Xe have been measured. In the lab.-energy range from 3 eV up to 30 eV a rainbow maximum was observed and attributed to the attractive ground state potentials of these systems. From the angular positions of the primary rainbows the potential depths were derived. In the case of Ne2+ and Ar,+ these values are compared with the results of quantum chemical calculations and of semi-empirical estimates. From lowest energies up to El = 200 eV g-u-interference oscillations were observed for all systems. In the case of Ne+ —Ne two oscillatory structures with different frequen­ cies were detected and attributed to interference between 77-states and ^-states, respectively. With increasing atomic number of the rare gas atoms the g-u-structure becomes increasingly irregular. The measured angular distances were used to derive the potential energy difference between the interfering molecular states. The evaluation was carried out by varying parameters of analytical model potentials for the lower lying state and the difference potential until the quantum mechani­ cally calculated differential cross-section agreed with the experimental one within the experimental error. In the case of Ne2+ and Ar2+ the results are compared with ab initio calculations and experi­ mental results of other authors. For Kr+ —Kr and Xe+ —Xe a fit at all energies could not be obtained with a single set of parameters. This effect and the high irregularity of the experimental curves are attributed to fine structure splitting of the molecular states via the strong spin-orbit coupling in Kr and Xe.

 Title    Atomic and Molecular Properties of Metals from Artificial Cloud Experiments in the Upper Atmosphere  
 Abstract    Time and frequency resolved observations of metal vapor clouds in the upper atmosphere can be used to obtain information on atomic and molecular properties of the metals involved, e. g. atomic transition probabilities, photoionization cross sections, chemical reactivity of atoms in the ground state and in excited states. Experimental techniques of evaporation, the methods of obser­ vation and some of the more important results are discussed for Sr, Ba and Eu, in particular those which cannot be derived by laboratory experiment, namely, radiative transitions and oxidation pro­ cesses which involve metastable states.  Title    Ligand-Field Spin-Orbit Energy Levels in the d5 Electron Configuration of Octahedral and Tetrahedral Symmetry  
 Abstract    The complete ligand-field, Coulomb interelectronic repulsion, and spin-orbit interaction matrices have been derived for the d5 electron configuration within octahedral (Oh) and tetrahedral (Td) symmetry. The calculations were performed in both the weak-field and strong-field coupling schemes and complete agreement of the results was achieved. The energy matrices are parametrically dependent on ligand field (D q), Coulomb repulsion (B, C), and spin-orbit interaction (C). Correct energy diagrams are presented which display the splittings by spin-orbit perturbation as well as the effect of configuration mixing. Applications to the interpretation of electronic spectra, and to complete studies in magnetism are pointed out. The detailed behavior at the crossover of ground terms is considered.

 Title    Absorption Spectrum of As2 Further Analysis of the A-^X System and Observation of New Electronic States  
 Abstract    Within the study of the interaction between A and B states of As2 molecule, a high resolution analysis of 16 absorption bands with 11 <[t/<J17 in the A < — X system has been performed. The following constants are proposed for the A state: r oo = 40145.9 cm-1 , &>e = 262.7 cm" 1, coexe = 0.48 cm-1, fie = 0.0797 cm-1 , De ^ 3 X 10—8 cm-x , ae = 0.00031 cm-1 , re = 2.374 A. Three new vibronic levels have been discovered in the 42400 —44 500 cm-1 energy range, either directly or by the perturbations they induce in A levels.
